Album Notes Duran Duran: Simon LeBon, John Taylor, Nick Rhodes, Warren Cuccurullo, Sterling Campbell.Additional personnel: John Jones (keyboards, programming); Spike Edney, Stan Harrison, Luis Jardin, Paddy Lorimar, Bernard Fowler, Carol Kenyon, Tessa Niles, Silvia, Claudia.1990's LIBERTY introduced Duran Duran's second full-fledged lineup, with guitarist Warren Cuccurullo (ex-Zappa, ex-Missing Persons) and drummer Sterling Campbell (later in Soul Asylum) replacing Andy and Roger Taylor. The band's creative core of singer Simon LeBon, bassist John Taylor and Nick Rhodes on keyboards remained unchanged, however, and the album really doesn't sound that different from 1986's NOTORIOUS or 1988's BIG THING, except that Cuccurullo and Campbell are much better musicians than the folks they replaced.Cuccurullo reels off some surprisingly satisfying solos, as on the funk-pop opener "Violence of Summer (Love's Taking Over)." Though the band's commercial fortunes were on a downturn at the time of this album's release, LIBERTY is a more-than-respectable addition to its slick dance-pop canon. Reviews To me, this album is all about a band in transition. It is seriously underrated, but contains as many excellent moments as it does dreadful ones. For example, 'Violence of Summer' would have been an awesome song if Simon Lebon didn't shout absurdly (and embarrassingly) at the beginning of the song. Likewise, 'First Impression', 'Venice Drowning' and 'Downtown' don't really seem to know what they want to be - not necessarily bad songs, just not one thing or the other. On the other hand, there are some absolute classics on this album, such as 'Liberty', 'Serious' and the totally wonderful 'My Antarctica', which demonstrate the band's creative abilities to the full. In short, don't be put off by the 3/5 rating, I do love the album - it's just too much of a mixed bag to have ever been commercially successful or even to have received a succinct classification. If you like Duran Duran and haven't heard this yet, try it, you might like it. Review ID: 10000000002367258 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 24/08/06 by: I love this album, it is probably the most under-rated Duran Duran album ever! Originally released in 1990 at a time when I was young and having a great time with my friends, we all lived and worked in a pub together...enough said Here's my favourites; The best track for me is First Impression, never released as a single but I was convinced it should have been, it's one of those rock songs that keeps you moving and smacks you right in the face from the start. Serious is a great ballad, not a mushy, sickly ballad but a ballad all the same, great sound and great Le Bon lyrics, this song was recently sampled by Ferry Corsten on his single release "Fire", this track includes Simon Le Bon on vocals. Violence Of Summer is a great pop song and would have charted better in another time, Warren C's guitar solos are as good as anything on the acclaimed 1993 Wedding album here. My Antarctica is a great flowing ballad, one of those tunes thats good to lay back to, eyes closed with foot gently tapping to the steady rhythm. All in all, Liberty is a must for anyone exploring DDs back catalogue, it will pleasantly surprise you and possibly irritate you in places but thats the beauty of it.
