He didn't resist temptation. He pursued it.

Based on the play by Stephen Jeffreys, The Libertine recounts the life of the scandalously decadent John Wilmot (Johnny Depp), the second Earl of Rochester.

Married, but not satisfied, he has a passionate romance with a young actress, Elizabeth Barry (Samantha Morton), and writes a scurrilous play that lampoons its commissioner, King Charles II (John Malkovich, who starred in the play when it was staged at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre).

  Brilliant!

Me, being a Johnny Depp fan (how could i not be) was expecting another perfectly played, slightly odd character. This is exactly what i got.
It is the perfect mixture of comedy, drama, sex and slight violence.

Throughout my eyes were glued to my tv screne and by the end i was in tears as i had been so familiarised with Johnny Depps character, John Wilmot... (i will say nomore about the ending for those who are yet to see it).

Anyway. A brilliant actor = A brilliant Film = A brilliant buy

(:

A fantastically funny film, Johnny Depp in the lead role is so versatile, this is so not one of your run of the mill films. FANTASTIC.

  the libertine Johnny depp
Review created: 26/09/09

a very unusuall film not one of johnny depp's best but still a good 7/10 film in historical costume drama genre.

based in england just after the restoration of the monarchy(1660) depp plays a fornicating earl of rochester drinking and whoreing his way through the film but you dont get to see much action most of it out of camera so most of it is up to your imagination.

not much in the history of the period but a damn good romp when he teaches miss barry how to act it reminds me of my fair lady but on the scale of debbie does dallas.

its 18 certificate but its very soft porn esspecially when johnny vegas moons at the crowd in the theatre.

a good film could become a classic only because of mr depp and mr malkovich being the two principle actors if lesser actors would have been cast the film would just be a one watch then sell on.

give it a go 7/10

I bought the dvd because it was baudy, but I was pleasantly surprised by the acting of Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton and John Malkovitch. Don't get me wrong there is a lot of swearing and no holding back on anything. Johnny Depp is superb as the Earl of Rochester. He did everything to excess, but when he decides to nurture Mrs Barry's talent as an actress, we watch as she rises in power, whilst he slips further down the ladder. The film colour is dull, but otherwise it is very much like observing actors on a stage in close quarters. The director explains a lot about the film, but not why it is such a dull colour. Otherwise superb.

The Libertine... big word, meaning libertine.

I like the era. The critiques said it was raunchy and filthy. That was right up my street. I don't think Johnny Depp has ever been in a movie that wasn't excellent. The man is an amazing actor and interpreter of rolls. I thought I was going to enjoy it for the subject matter, the cinematography, the acting and the actor... I wasn't disappointed.

I bought it as I am a fan of Johnny Depp and wanted to see him in a sexy role. It was good, though not what I expected.

  The Good and The Bad

Yes, at the beginning I certainly felt dishearted...what on earth was Depp doing; being a s*x fanatic? Of course, millions of women drool at the sight of Depp but I firs thought this went a bit too far, too crude. John Malkovich didn't really have a chance to shine, in fact I thought only Depp could and the wife at the end. Even though most of the film was lacking in skill and brilliance I think the ending is something that I'd purely watch again and again. The scene between Rochester and his wife is outstanding, Depp isnt known for his brilliant acting (Not won an oscar in the near 2 decades of acting?) but this does show what he CAN do. His crying (and wetting himself) were so convincing I was indeed forcing back my own tears. The make up at the end where hes lying in bed is outstanding. So my opinion is, dont be too disheartened at the beginning, as you wont be disspointed by the end scenes. ( I also dislike Depp having short hair at the end. Also wig was soo unconvincingly real; obvious fake. Its meant to be a wig, but not stand out that much.)

I found this film to be crude and boring. Was life really like that in those days? It was disjointed and left you wishing you hadn't bothered. Sorry Johnny definately not your best film.

  The debt to pleasure
Review created: 01/02/08
by:

For those familiar with the work of John Wilmot - the Libertine poet - this film will come as an interesting journey into a segment of the writer's life. Although at times slightly rushed, the cast (particularly Depp and Malkovich) do some justice to a figure largely disregarded by history, though credited by the likes of Voltaire and Dryden.

"All this to love and rapture's due, Must we not pay a debt to pleasure too?"

  HONEST AND FUNNY
Review created: 10/12/07

I bought this DVD because it was a Jonny Depp film I had heard so much about but never seen.
Once you get past the swearing ,sexual content and historical inaccuracies this is an exceptional film.
It is very well acted ,funny and honest.

Something really different and well worth watching .

Well Johnny depp is normally fantastic and again he pays the role of the Earl of Rochester brilliantly.

The film is interesting and on the risky side (not one to watch with your parents) but instightful at the same time. I wouldn't say I would watch this film again though but did manage to watch it all the way through.

Not bad but buy it if it is very cheap and you want to add to your DVD collection.

  The Libertines
Review created: 10/02/07

Let's face it, this really just an excuse for Johnny fans to indulge themselves under the guise of historical drama. However, we don't need any more reason than that do we? This film pulls no punches: it is a dark biography of the Earl of Rochester and we are told at the start not to expect a happy ending. The cinematography matches the mood of his life and times perfectly and the style of the film is by turns sumptuous and stark. The historical aspects and Rochester's relationship with the king are not exploited and this is my one real criticism as this is Depp as actor rather than just eye candy. He is supported, and at times, acted off the screen by the wonderful Sam Morton who plays his muse, protege and conscience. Rosumand Pike is the pretty and ineffectual (and pretty ineffectual) long-suffering wife who rarely gets the chance to steal a scene until the end of the film. If you love Depp and Morton, you'll love this; if you don't, you may leave the film feeling ungratified.
