  Letters From Iwo Jima

Iwo Jima was one of a string of strategic Pacific islands that the Americans had to capture as the war with Japan neared its bloody climax. This remarkable drama, directed by Clint Eastwood - and a follow-up to his film "Flags Of Our Fathers", which told the story from the American viewpoint - tells how the Japanese defenders of Iwo Jima dug in and bravely prepared to fight to the death against overwhelming odds. A remarkable film and possibly the first since "All Quiet on the Western Front" to tell the story of the "other side" so sincerely and honestly.

I'm not a real big fan of war movies, but this one got my attention. It tells of the last stand of the Japanese soldiers as the Americans launch an assault on the island of Iwo Jima. It tells the story from the human point, making you realise that Japanese soldiers and families suffered just like the Allied soldiers during war. The battle scenes are well shot and the acting first class. A great movie directed by Clint Eastwood.

A great story on a very tragic piece of history.

I, along with many other people, was not around during the second world war, this story looking at the battle of Iwo Jima taken from the Japonese side of events, was a very powerful story, which made the fact it happened to so many people, losing their lives for such a small island, handled with some sort of compassion to all concerned.
I would strongly recommend this film to anyone.

Letters From Iwo Jima an absolutly fantastic film really explains and gives you a different view on the other sides forces and struggle to win the war. One of Clint Eastwoods best films I think. The fight scenes really bring it to your attention how bloody wars can be and the devastation on both sides of civilians and military. Would defintly recommend.

The writing, direction and acting are superb. If you are a big fan of standard Hollywood fare then this film may not be for you. It has a very European feel in that it is thoughtful in its treatment of the subject matter and makes no judgements of the characters. There are no good guys and bad guys here, just people dealing with a terrible situation as best they can. In the future this film will be considered a classic war movie in the same way that All Quiet On The Western Front is.

Only buy if you speak Japanese

Possibly a great film, its partner film "Flags of our Father" was. Sadly unless you speak Japanese or like to read sub-titles this film is unwatchable.

Clint Eastwood at his best, here he captures the Japanese side of the conflict. In Flags of Our Fathers which Clint Eastwoods shows the American view of the Epic Battle to capture Iwo Jima. recommend both of these excellent films
