Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is no ordinary cop. He's a Mad Max gone maniacal, a man whose killing expertise and suicidal recklessness make him a Lethal Weapon to anyone he works against. Or with.
Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is an easygoing homicide detective with a loving family, a big house and a pension he doesn't want to lose. Imagine Murtaugh's shock when he learns his partner is a guy with nothing left to lose; wild-eyed, burnt-out Martin Riggs. Lethal Weapon is the trill-packed story of two Vietnam-vets-turned-cops who have just one other thing in common; both hate to work with partners. But their partnership becomes the key to survival when a routine murder investigation leads to all-out, take-no-prisoners, martial-arts-and-machine-guns war with an international heroin ring. Director Richard Donner moves that war at two speeds: fast and faster. Hot LA days and nights explode in one show-topping scene after an other, culminating in a no-holds-barred battle between Riggs and his Angel-of-Death nemesis (Gary Busey) - an electrifying sequence incorporating three martial-art-styles and requiring four full nights to film. The combination of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover is flawless as they butt heads continously, while still managing to cover each others backs. Mel Gibson plays the insane, but Morally sound Riggs perfectly while Danny Glover moans and gripes his way through his mid-life crisis with this maniac in tow.
Unfortunately these days one of the character establishing scenes with Riggs is missing, the one where he shoots a sniper killing kids in a playground has been cut from all copies on sale by the Politically Correct Bureaucrats. Though not too much is lost as you still realise his complete disregard for his own safety later on.
The plot is not particularly complex, but that isn't what you're looking for when you buy this film. If you want a good, wholesome laugh, with lots of bad guys getting what they deserve, some helicopter chases, loads of guns, bombs, grenades and even some martial, while seeing our two unlikely heroes pull through, then this is one for you! Plus there's the sequels!

excellent film, very intertaininglove watching all mel gibson films and am trying to build up my collection of his movies, the lethal weapon saga's are definately my favourite though

) It had been a while since I last saw this and in that time I had forgotten just how good this film is. If like me you are looking for a piece of pure entertainment then you cannot go to far wrong with this. The pacing of the film is perfect, always providing something to keep you watching when it threatens to slow down too much. The action sequences still hold up today with a plot which moves on nicely. This film is by no means perfect but the central performances far outweigh any slight plot holes. The first and best of the Lethal Weapon series.

My opinion on the dvd I bought recentlyReview created: 05/10/06
I love the film especially as its got Mel Gibson in it!! The action keeps you gripped to the edge of your seat and its got humour in as well. It starts off as two partners who hate the sight of each other then they grow to like each other and work as a team.
