Leica M8 - An incredible tool
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.
The Leica M8 digital rangefinder camera is a remarkable tool, and enables you to use the finest lenses in the world, Leica M-series lenses.
Compared to a DSLR, the camera is light and small and hence you will often find it with you when you want to catch a photograph.
"Catching" photographs is quite relevant to the rangefinder, as it is a different way of photographing, and tends to tune and attune a different way of seeing in the user. Rangefinders aren't for everyone, but for those who do love this way, nothing else can compare, and at the moment the M8 and M8.2 are the only way to go.
If you haven't used a rangefinder before, buyer beware. DSLRs and point and shoot cameras may have made you flabby. The manual focus and exposure of the M series requires a lot more participation by the user. For those willing to invest themselves, however, and a great deal of money, this camera will return the effort put in by assisting in creating incredible images. Forget that it is only 10 megapixels. The Dalsa/Kodak sensor in these cameras is really incredible and the lenses make full use of it.
Finally, while the M8 is expensive, the M8.2 offers little in terms of improvements, and no difference in image quality but costs a fair chunk more. With the recent Leica rebates on the M8 body, the secondhand market has really come down and you can get an M8 body now for around $2000 to $2600. At that price, be prepared to invest in the M-system glass, but rest assured that this glass has been supported since 1954, and that isn't about to change.
To all prospective buyers, good luck in your bidding! You won't regret purchasing this wonderful tool.
