Lacklustre Big Screen Outing for the League
Review created: 30/08/06

Although not a massive fan of the series on which this movie was based, it was nonetheless essential viewing and was packed with some truly inspired characters. This is however where this film falls down!

Due to the plot - in which Royston Vasey locals must cross over into our world to prevent the writer's killing them off and therefore preventing a disaster of apocalyptic proportions - we are unfortunatly lumbered with the more 'normal' characters (Hilary Briss, Herr Lipp etc) rather than the more memorable exaggerated characters (Papa Lazarou, Edward and Tubbs) although they do appear......but all too briefly. There are, however, loads of cameos from some great British acting and comic talent - look out for David Warner who completely steals the film for me.

This film has 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound and is presented in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen. Packed with special features, including a commentary, deleted scenes, out-takes and several featurettes - this DVD has been put together extremely well.

In summary, this film does not hit the heights of the TV series on which it was based....maybe one for true fans only.

The league of gentlemen folks decide to go a lot further on the weirdness stakes and it doesn't really pay off. Actors and characters all coincide in real (unreal) time in this spin-off romp that doesn't quite make it.

Absolutely HILARIOUS !!! Have been a fan of theirs since the beginning, so felt obliged to buy the film. I was not disappointed !!! was glad they didn't eat the "Fishcakes" though !!! The "Brown Fish" they were made from didn't seem too healthy somehow !!! You must watch the "Out Takes", they're HILARIOUS too !!! This movie is an absolute MUST for any fan of "The League" !!!

  Creepy, but good!

What to do if your world is being destroyed?

Well, the residents of Royston Vasey find themselves in just such a predicament.
Watch their misfortunes as they cross over to the real world to try and make the writers save them from Armageddon. What do they find? A whole host of creepiness and hilarity.

Not as good as most of the series but, nevertheless, still a thouroughly enjoyable film!

  Brilliantly Grotesque
Review created: 03/11/08

This is what British comedians do best; obscure, character-based and undeniably sick. Brilliantly constructed, a fully formed film from several concepts, this looks at the relationship between authors and characters and charts the difficulties in moving away from a well-loved series and onto new projects.

I laughed, I cried, I made a little brown fish.

The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse DVD
Review created: 11/04/07

I was dying to see this film as i am a big fan of League of Gentlemen the tv series! It was a good film and i enjoyed it very much, but the film is not as good as the trailers made it out to be. The film did not show much of certain popular characters and at times seemed to wander off its original plot line. I think they had great potential to make an even better film than they made! Hopefully they will make another film, and use their characters for better inspiration! But, i have to say, i did enjoy the film quite a bit and i think it is more for the League of Gentlemen fans!!! You will enjoy it League of Gentlemen fan!!!!

  Apocalaughtic!
Review created: 07/01/07

I have to admit that when I first heard about the Apocalypse film it was a worry.
I mean, they have a lot to live up to, don't they?
When they first did a stage show they won the Perrier award and when they did radio they won a Sony award. When they ventured onto our tellys they won a Bafta award, a Royal Television Society Award and the Golden Rose of Montreux.

When the first series aired in January 1999 it was mind-blowing! A real breath of fresh air in British Comedy, and when the second series aired a year later it built on that foundation and sealed the shows cult status around the world, our web stats show that we have received visitors from every single country on the planet!

The 'Local show for Local People' showcased the Gents talent for live performance and opened doors for the gents to do more live performing such as 'Art' in the west end.

The fans favorite has always been the Christmas Special, less of a sketch show and more a tribute to classic horror films yet still wrapped up in the delicious League style.

And then of course there was the 'difficult' third series, still a hit with the loyal hardcore fans of course, but maybe a little bit ahead of its time for a mainstream TV audience.

As I say, a lot to live up to.

So now we have the film and...Well a film is different isn't it? It will be seen by much larger numbers than the radio or TV shows and with the third series in mind I was worried.

Well as you know I was lucky enough to get to see the film yesterday at a press screening in London and all my doubts were blown away (literally) in the first few minutes!

I am not going to give plot lines away as some reviewers have done, nor am I going to tell you the catch phrases (although there is really only one) but I will try to tell you what they have managed to achieve with this film!

Leaving the cinema on Monday night I could only imagine writing 'Oh my god, it's brilliant, its amazing, its the best thing they have ever done, better than the first, second and specials all rolled into one!' Of course I owe my visitors a much better explanation than that! So, why is it brilliant?

This is a film for everyone, the casual fan, the obsessive fan the occasional fan and even for someone who is sat in the wrong cinema! You don't have to have watched the series to enjoy this film; it works on so many levels.

This film reminded me why I am a League of Gentlemen Fan!

You can tell that filming was a true labour of love too; the attention to detail is incredible. The sets for the TV show were always detailed but I am going to have to watch the film again just to look at the background!

The story moves at a swift pace, the action carrying us from Royston Vasey to the real world where we meet the 'Creators' who are of course the League themselves! Along the way we manage to bump into favorite characters from the show but always within the central story unlike the TV sketch show.

I was glad that the film was dark in places, a little scary and a little strange...only fitting for The League of Gentlemen. The Gents also managed to get their revenge on the BBC censors, not as much slipping in the word 'Mongoloid' as screaming it from the roof tops!

Some may think the Gents portrayal of themselves a little indulgent but that’s the joke and with that comes my only worry, the in jokes I mention below may puzzle some viewers and they might come over a little too clever...as if!

Just buy it!

The League Of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (DVD)

I found this film a little disappointing. Like most TV shows, it didn't really come together as a feature length film. There were some funny moments, but too many of the gags fell flat amongst the convoluted plot. I would have liked to have seen more of some of the more memorable and amusing characters than those which carried the story, such as Herr Lipp, who's 'comedy' derives solely from 'Carry On' type innuendo. All in all it wasn't funny enough to be a great comedy film and not scary enough to be the horror film it attempted to be at times. The DVD extras are good though, and I'm still glad I bought this on Ebay. Would have been less happy if I'd paid shop price though!

I thoroughly enjoyed Apocalypse, and am a big fan of The League of Gentlemen, but this film did bear some resemblance to the cult classic Monstermind(1987) which you can possibly get hold of by contacting john(removethisbit-spambegone)@phelancom.freeserve.co.uk

  A successful transformation

After initial concerns that this could be a big mistake taking a successful series and making a full length feature, I am pleased to say the more I watched the more involved I became in it. The magic is still there and it is a must for any fan.
