Has a avid fan of animation the film itself is great, the story is clear and understanding, the last unicorn has a quest to look for her own kind, she teams up with a wizzard and this woman to join the quest, but gets mixed up with the baddy, king haggard voiced by Christopher Lee. All in all this film is magical, the songs and the graphics are excelent.

This was my favourite film as a child, so when I saw it was available to buy, I had to have it. Don't expect amazing visuals (it is a fairly old film), but do expect "one of the most emotionally frank, sophisticated and mature G-rated cartoons ever made".

  The Last Unicorn (1982)
Review created: 17/11/08

A much-forgotten animated film based on Peter Beagle's best-selling book that whilst understandably struggles to compete with contemporary mainstream children's films, a cult following (mainly of 20somethings like myself!) bare vocal testament to its timeless appeal.

The story focuses on a unicorns journey to discover if she is the last of her kind, as she is told as much by a passing butterfly. On her way she meets the ever-ineffective Schmendrick the Magician and the feisty Molly Grue who join her on her quest, as well as meetings with Kings, witches, magical beasts and a band of amicable outlaws.

Featuring songs from America (the band) and the voice talents of the likes of Mia Farrow and Angela Lansbury, the film has star quality, and the animation does them great justice. A tale leaning more to (generally) the tastes of females has enough humour and action to keep both boys and girls hooked to the end and the final fight between good and evil.

My only criticism is that whilst clearly aimed at a young audience, there are parts of the film that have been known to scare younger children; a Harpy is seen feasting on the bodies of the two evil owners of a traveling freak-show, and the Red Bull is far more intimidating than today's inept 'bad guys' ever will be. Defiantly not for children subject to nightmares!

This was bought for my two daughters to watch. they love it but it is pretty scary. It must have been classified in the 70's when it was made as the "U" rating is misleading. It is a great film though - one of a kind.

I loved this film when I first saw it when I was little, and it has stuck with me ever since, buy it and enjoy the wonderful story and good animation with your family or on you own. Altogether a good, round and enjoyable film.
