Lara Croft - Tomb Raider (DVD 2001)

Slick, agile, and of course sexy, Lara Croft became a video game icon. Her appearance was one of the few to break the mold set by cartoonish characters aimed directly at an adolescent audience. With the character's popularity booming, Paramount let $80 million loose for the film adaptation, and succeeded amazingly well from a financial standpoint.

Angelina Jolie in the role of heroine Lara Croft was a flawless casting call. Her attitude, charisma, and athleticism let her own the screen while capturing the qualities of the character. The added padding to her breasts to get them as accurate as possible didn't happen on accident either.

Tomb Raider is an action film, one that calls for an astounding level of disbelief. Croft is an adventurer, living for nothing other than tracking down the latest in high priced artifacts. For the amazing life and world changing items she finds, it's tough to believe she only has one true enemy.

Aside from her over-the-top and energetic fight scenes, the movie plays out straight. The right dash of comedy nicely fits within the tone, though it poorly delves into time travel without any surprise or shock from anyone, including the audience. The latter can only groan as the conclusion falls apart amidst a nice action set piece.

The high budget allows Tomb Raider to create a sheen look. Some of the computer generated effects end up flat and obvious. With the rapid pace of the editing, there is little time to dwell on these problems. Far too much energy is given to the fun choreography to care.

It's nice to see the script is allowed to expand upon the game's mythos, though they don't always mix perfectly from a story standpoint. What's important is that the character is captured, and countless video game-based movies have missed this entirely. Fans of the game will recognize Lara's agility and moves.

Tomb Raider also strays from an obvious Indiana Jones comparison. The elaborate set-ups and similar concepts are certainly in place, but you never feel as if the writers or director has purposely become "inspired." Lara is definitely her own character and can stand out against any competition.

The film does drag in spots and a few edits wouldn't have hurt. It's by no means an intelligent effort either, relying entirely on its looks rather than logic or brains. That's exactly what this is a meant to be though, a rousing summer blockbuster. You can't take a lot away from Tomb Raider when you're in that mindset.

As a big fan of the Tomb Raider games I was intrigued by this film. If it was anything like the games then I figured I would love it. Unluckily it wasn't totally what I was expecting.

The special effects were great - guns here, explosions there - and they were backed up by Angelina Jolies acting, the big let down in this film for me was that it just wasn't the game. I couldn't really get into the storyline, it was good, but just not for me.

It is a good film, but if you are a big fan of the game, it may not be totally to your liking (as with mine).

I love the lady and enyjoyed the film, although a bit slow at times. May be I was watching Lara to much. I Will buy more of the sequels

It was excellent all the way though ,special effects brilliant.
The charter of laura croft was portrayed xcellent by the actress who played her.

THE REASON THAT I BROUGHT THIS DVD IS SPLIT MANY WAYS, MY PARTNER HAS A THING FOR ANGELINA SO IT WAS PARTLY FOR HIS BENEFIT, MY SEVEN YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WANTS TO BE TOMB RAIDER SO IT WAS ALSO FOR HER BENEFIT AND AS FOR MYSELF I THINK ANGELINA IS ONE OF THE BEST ACTRESSES TO COME OUT OF AMERICA IN A LONG TIME. THE EFFECTS WERE BELIEVABLE AND THE PLOT WAS INTRIGUING. ACTION FROM THE WORD GO AND RIGHT THROUGH TO THE END. AN A+ MOVIE WHICH IM VERY PLEASED TO HAVE BROUGHT AT A VERY LOW PRICE ON EBAY.

This is a great DVD to watch time and time again for all the family. If you want to watch something with some action and excitement but not much blood and gore (if any!) then I would recommend Tomb Raider. It packed with excitement for the children, Angelina Jolie for the men and girl power for the women! A film that you can watch anytime of the day and as many times as you want!Packed with lot's of special features of behind the scenes,how it was made and DVD Rom stuff that will get you watching for hours on end!
10/10 for entertainment value and worth every penny!!

This truly is a most dreadful film. I only bought it to catch a look at Daniel Craig and whilst his bod is hot, his fake American accent made me cringe so much I must have been 10 inches thinner than I was before I started to watch the film. Angelina Jolie stinks like a tonne of rotten fish on a hot day and is more wooden than Pinocchio. Full of obvious cliches and storylines that have been done better and seen before in such classics as Raiders of the Lost Ark. All in all, a Turkey reminiscent of those extra fat ones ready for the Christmas market.

very good film for all the family.Action all the way with good acting.I have never been into pc games,so was not sure about getting it,I am glad I did I would recomend this film .

Angelina Jolie stars as Lara Croft, and yes she is so sexy in this, without being sexist, this reason its a 5! no, right back to the film, its a real blockbuster, the film itself has the making of indian jones style and oo7, yes there is a story line too it.

One fragment of the film is the fast movement of the filmation, this can be a bit off-putting and hard too follow, the graphics are superb, as usual, and really as a nights entertainment is worth a real 5!

I don't quite understand how people can actually find ths movie entertainting. OK, it has some nice action scenes and Angelina Jolie is the PERFECT CAST for Lara Croft, BUT let's face it: The movie is HORRIBLE and has a POOR STORY.
I guess you might like the adaptation if you enjoyed movies like `Mortal Kombat`. Nothing for me, though.

I had already seen this film when I purchased it from ebay as I have the video but I am trying to replace all my old videos with dvd's and this is one of my favourites. Angelina Jolie is great as Lara Croft and the chance to see Daniel Craig naked in the shower couldn't be missed!! Great entertainment, fascinating locations and explosive effects. An all round good fun movie based on the computer game.

I FOUND THIS FILM TO BE VERY DIFFRENT FROM THE GAMES THAT I HAVE PLAYED.

IT WAS A VERY GOOD FILM TO WATCH AND THE SPECIAL FX WERE GREAT.

Considering "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" was pretty good entertainment, this sequel was a disappointment. Critics disagreed and liked this one better, but I disagree with them. As with most sequels, it just overdoes what was popular in the first film.

In this case, that means the action is WAY overdone (since it was too much on the first film, to begin with); "Laura" becomes WAY too much of a feminist-macho icon and Jolie's British accent here is so phony it's embarrassing, and annoying to hear.

On he good side, I enjoyed the exotic locales (Far East and Africa), it had very little profanity and some of the stunts were wild and fun to watch. As far as I know, they don't have another sequel planned, which is smart.

All of my family love this film ( my kids in particular they are 6 and 5), action, comedy, good plot. Love it.

Great movie involving lots of action. It turns out that Lara finds an old clock in her secret room in her huge house. That starts the hunt for the triangle which can control time. The hunt starts somewhere in the Amazon and ends somewhere in the Arctic.

All I can say is this - brill film, fab script, plenty of kick a$s action from a girl and if after watching this, you dont feel like you should be down the gym pumping iron and swimming for 'Gold', for a body somewhere resembling Ms Jolie's, then you must be one big couch potato.
