Album Notes Personnel: LaVern Baker (vocals); Sy Johnson (arranger); Cornell Dupree (guitar); William Easley, Ronnie Cuber (saxophone); Randy Brecker (trumpet); James Pugh (trombone); Paul Griffin (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Bernard Purdie (drums).Recorded at Soundtrack and Sound On Sound Studios, New York, New York in October and November 1991. Includes liner notes by Dan Morganstern.A terrific comeback album (she hadn't recorded since the late '60s) by the first great female rock star; this is also a de facto history of four decades of rootsy American pop music. Baker is an incredibly versatile singer. Here, she handles soul, ("Knock on Wood"), country ("Tennessee Waltz,") blues ("Rock Me Baby"), '70s singer/songwriter tunes ("You've Got a Friend") and sophisticated jazzy pop ("Why Don't You Do Right") with equal aplomb. The slight deepening of her voice from her '50s heyday adds an element of gravitas that's thoroughly appropriate. The backings are similarly excellent, ranging from swinging big band arrangements to smoky soul grooves courtesy of studio aces Cornell Dupree and Bernard Purdie.
