Animated comedy martial arts fable, with Jack Black voicing an overweight panda who becomes a warrior to protect the lands from a formidable foe
In the Valley of Peace, Po the Panda (Jack Black) dreams of being a martial arts warrior. The prologue to Kung Fu Panda is a beautifully animated, stylised 2D dream sequence about Po - "Legend tells of a legendary warrior whose legendary skills were the stuff of legend". Only Black could get away with such lines. In reality though, Po is seemingly destined to take over the noodle business run by his father (Hong), who insists, "We are noodle folk. Broth runs through our veins." Po's only connection with the real martial artists is a fanboy's encyclopaedic knowledge of their moves and deeds.

Everything changes when the venerable tortoise master Oogway (Kim) selects Po, seemingly by accident, to be the "Dragon Warrior", a fabled martial artist who can protect the Valley from the dreaded return of the fearsome Tai Lung (McShane). Oogway's protégé at the Jade Palace, Shifu (Hoffman) and his five highly skilled students - Tigress (Jolie), Monkey (Chan), Mantis (Rogen), Viper (Liu), and Crane (Cross), aka "the Furious Five" - are understandably bewildered, nay miffed at this decision. They resolve to humiliate Po into giving up and leaving the Palace. Po knows full well he's useless, but he's always wanted to be more than just "me", so good-humouredly persists. Meanwhile, Tai Lung has broken out of prison. He believes it's his destiny to be the Dragon Warrior, despite Oogway's decision to the contrary, so he heads back to wreak destruction and claim the mystical "Dragon Scroll".

There's not much in the way of Shrek-style knowing humour here, beyond a fond affection for the kind of mystical mumbo jumbo to be found in many old martial arts movies. Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, the writers who get the story credit here, previously played around with this kind of comedy homage in Bulletproof Monk, but this film is better realised, picking up on elements of Stephen Chow's comedy martial arts movies (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle).

Its storyline of a nobody given the chance to fulfil his impossible dreams is as hoary as it comes, but the whole endeavour is realised with a highly likeable verve. The cast of characters are like the CGI descendents of The Jungle Book's anthropomorphised animals; they're distinctive, well-rounded and doubtless destined for ranges of much-loved toys and games.

Black lifts Po out of the realm of cliché, while Dustin Hoffman and Ian McShane have a lot of fun bringing their characters to life - especially McShane, who is spot on as the aggrieved snow leopard who has some serious father issues. It's such fun, even the tackiness of the inevitable message about self-belief ("To make something special, you just have to believe that it's special") is made tolerable.
Verdict
Just what you need from a family film - Kung Fu Panda is visually striking, exciting, likeable and, most importantly, funny.

An all-star cast provide the voiceovers for this animated hit. When I first heard about the movie I had visions of a truly awful movie... but I couldn't have been more wrong. Kung Fu Panda is a great film.

Overweight, clumsy and not the brightest of lights on the Christmas Tree; Po is a panda who idolises the "Furious Five" team of Kung Fu legends and dreams of following in their footsteps.

Almost by a miracle Po is chosen as the next Dragon Warrior and will use his "awesomness" and skill to defeat the evil Tai Lung; but of course Po is hardly the most suitable for the role. But through persistence and a little luck Po goes on to fulfil his challenge and his dream.

This movie really surprised me. It's a very good stroyline and immensly funny. Jack Black is superb in the lead role and the cast of stars that have joined in really do well to make the movie what it is. There loads of comedy and action and the computer graphics are very quirky and cool.

This is a great family movie and good fun for everyone. 4/5

Excellent animation, brilliant voice work, and aimed at kids rather than their parents-Kung Fu Panda delivers the action and laughs at a great pace. Michael Clarke Duncan is the standout voice playing the prison guard and Ian McShane makes an appealing villain. A great diversion from the appalling weather.

Fantastic animation ... shame about the plot

This film rates a "good" for the animation, characterisation and voice over quality. However, the plot is somewhat lacking. It filled a wet Sunday afternoon ... but will probably not be watched again. Don't bother buying it if you can borrow it...!

We found it very entertaining. joke were at just the right standard for children to under stand and adults to have a little chuckle. The standard of grafics was well above the norm. I know its computer enhanced, but I still hark back to the days human drawing the pictures. It's my age that is coming through sixty five. All I can say now is I'm addicted to cartoons. Finally -- BRING THEM ON !!!

  kung fu panda
Review created: 29/05/09

What's a panda to do when his dreams of kung-fu awesomeness awake to the cold reality of noodle-making? Clumsy, overweight Po dreams of becoming a kung fu master like China's revered "furious five," but instead seems destined to follow in the footsteps of his father and grandfather in the restaurant business. When great leader Oogway has a vision that the imprisoned kung fu warrior Tai Lung will soon escape, he declares it time to choose China's dragon warrior--one kung fu master deemed worthy of possessing the dragon's scroll and its secret to limitless power. Po and all the townspeople rush to the Jade Palace atop the highest mountain to witness the contest between Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey, Mantis, Crane and Viper , but Po is locked outside the palace. After a miracle of sorts, Po lands inside the palace gates, where he is chosen as the dragon warrior and placed under the tutelage of the decidedly non-plussed master Shifu. An unconventional student to say the least, hilarity reigns as Shifu tries desperately to make Po into some semblance of a kung fu warrior. Can Po possibly fulfill his destiny as dragon warrior, or was Oogway's final decision a critical mistake? A film rich with hilarious moments, superior animation, and an important message about believing in oneself and the power that comes from within, Kung Fu Panda is great entertainment that will have the whole family laughing and begging for more.

po is a lazy panda(jack black),all he wants to do is eat and slack off,but all this changes when he inadvertantly gets chosen as the dragon warrior, then it falls to master shifu(dustin hoffman)to find a way of training this out of shape slob.what follows is an action packed but lighthearted martial arts fest with the obvious happy ending scenario.aside from black and hoffman other big names make an appearance, such as jackie chan(monkey)angelina jolie(tigress)also lucy liu (viper) and seth rogan(mantis).a great film for all the family.
