Album Notes
Kraftwerk: Ralf Hutter, Florian Schneider (vocals, synthesizer); Karl Bartos, Wolfgang Flur (percussion).Recorded at Klingklang Studio, Dusseldorf, Germany. All tracks have been digitally remastered.THE MAN-MACHINE and its predecessor, 1977's TRANS-EUROPE EXPRESS, deserve their exalted position in the pantheon of modern music, if only for their importance in shaping the future development of hip-hop and dance music. The concept behind The Man-Machine took Kraftwerk's mechanistic vision of humanity to its logical extreme, but the music within captured the group at their most engagingly melodic. Instantly memorable, "The Model" reached number 1 in the UK singles chart three years later, and proved to be a direct inspiration for the wave of gloomy electronic bands that quickly followed. However, none of them ever came close to grasping the subtle human touch that lay behind Kraftwerk's faceless exterior.

Being one of the first people at school to discover Kraftwerk (and one of the few to appreciate them) I bought this album when it first came out.

I have a number of their albums and bought them all again when they came out on CD.

What can I say, this is a brilliant CD from a brilliant band. Kraftwerk were pioneers of electronic music and if it weren't for them pushing the boundaries of early synthesisers and sequencers and experimenting with innovative effects music today would be much less exciting.

I have to say I had the last laugh when they released 'The Model' as a single and it went straight to Number One. Nearly everyone at school who, only weeks before, had said I was strange for liking Kraftwerk were now spending their pocket money, buying the single and doing 'Robotic Dancing' up and down the corridors...

Personally I don't think 'The Model' is the best track on the album. Ok so it has a good tune and the lyrics are great but it is far too commercial for my liking.
For me, any one of the other tracks; 'The Robots', 'Spacelab', 'Metropolis', 'Neon Lights' or 'The Man Machine' is much better musically and technically far superior. I would listen to any one of them over 'The Model' every time, no contest.

Having said that, picking a favorite track is a bit difficult but I guess I would have to go with 'Neon Lights' for its sheer musicality and some of the loveliest lyrics around.

On the subject of lyrics, they don't provide them, which is a real shame as I do love to have that little printed booklet snuggling inside my CD case.

This classic CD is a must for all electronic music fans (and the cover photo is a classic which kicked up quite a stink when it was first published) and should be in everyone's collection.

Regards
tbod
