Being one of the first people at school to discover Kraftwerk (and one of the few to appreciate them) I bought this album when it first came out.

I have a number of their albums and bought them all again when they came out on CD.

What can I say, this is a brilliant CD from a brilliant band. Kraftwerk were pioneers of electronic music and if it weren't for them pushing the boundaries of early synthesisers and sequencers and experimenting with innovative effects music today would be much less exciting.

I have to say I had the last laugh when they released 'The Model' as a single and it went straight to Number One. Nearly everyone at school who, only weeks before, had said I was strange for liking Kraftwerk were now spending their pocket money, buying the single and doing 'Robotic Dancing' up and down the corridors...

Personally I don't think 'The Model' is the best track on the album. Ok so it has a good tune and the lyrics are great but it is far too commercial for my liking.
For me, any one of the other tracks; 'The Robots', 'Spacelab', 'Metropolis', 'Neon Lights' or 'The Man Machine' is much better musically and technically far superior. I would listen to any one of them over 'The Model' every time, no contest.

Having said that, picking a favorite track is a bit difficult but I guess I would have to go with 'Neon Lights' for its sheer musicality and some of the loveliest lyrics around.

On the subject of lyrics, they don't provide them, which is a real shame as I do love to have that little printed booklet snuggling inside my CD case.

This classic CD is a must for all electronic music fans (and the cover photo is a classic which kicked up quite a stink when it was first published) and should be in everyone's collection.

Regards
tbod

A measure of true greatness is in design, with the ability of a piece to remain contemporary from the viewers’ perspective throughout time being paramount to defining it. Released in the same year as Abba’s The Album and the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, The Man Machine was Kraftwerk’s magnum opus, more than just a benchmark in electronic music from a time when most bands regarded a synthesiser like it was an iron lung, it not only took the hitherto enigmatic quartet into the pop world (Typically obtuse, the brilliantly understated syncopation of The Model ate it’s original A-side Computer Love and was a UK number one single almost three years after the album was released) but it also defined the kernel of all forms of electronic music from then until the twenty first century. Consciously more melodic, accessible and post krautrock than any of it’s predecessors, each of The Man Machine’s half dozen pieces will probably have either influenced a record you’ve bought or have been sampled by an artist you love - from the vocoded, fledgling techno of The Robots, dance music’s most famous breakdown of all in The Model or the spiralling, chillout-before-there-was-rave of Neon Nights - everyone from Steve Strange to Afrika Bambata was taking notes and have continued to do so ever since. Just as essential in accurately signposting the development of popular music as Beggar’s Banquet, Definitely Maybe or Nevermind, The Man Machine sounds as completely pristine now as if it was shrink wrapped then.

Some trivia: The Model has been covered by amongst others Big Black (Weird and Angry) and Rammstein (Camp) and the whole thing runs for less than 40 minutes, the only nod to the era of it’s release.

  Kraftwerk - The Man-machine [Remastered] (CD 2001)
Review created: 07/03/09

Having bought this album when it first came out in LP form and playing it to death, I decided to buy this again (in CD form this time) after hearing that one of the group (Florian Schneider) had decided to quit.

After playing it just once I was catapulted back into the electronic music/new wave scene again and the music is just FAB. I have not heard this album for years and spookily I remembered most of the lyrics (what there are of them anyway)

The only thing I don't like about the album is that it’s just not long enough
:( - I'm sure Kraftwerk could have squeezed a couple more songs onto the album.
