  PAUL DON'T PULL ANY PUNCHES
Review created: 03/08/09

This album was one of four Kiss solo records put out in 1978. A lot of people say Paul's album is the most kiss-like, however there is a level of songwriting and recording professionalism which is absent from even Kiss' best releases of the day. The best songs are the rocking Love in Chains, It's Alright and Wouldn't you Like to Know Me. The wistful Take Me Away,, echoes Fleetwood Mac more than most Kiss fans appreciate, as does the sober Ain't Quite Right. The only let down on the album is the overly mushy Hold Me Touch Me, but overall this is an underrated classic which I wholly recommend.

Album notes
Personnel: Paul Stanley (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, e-bow); Bob Kulick (acoustic & electric guitar); Steve Lacey (guitar); Doug "Gling" Katsaros (piano, string synthesizer, background vocals); Steve Buslowe, Eric Nelson (bass); Richie Fontana, Craig Krampf, Carmine Appice (drums); Pepe Castro, Maria Vidal, Diana Grasselli, Miriam Naomi Valle (background vocals).Engineers include: Jeff Blixman, Paul Grupp, Peter Lewis.Recorded at Electric Lady, New York, New York; The Record Plant and The Village Recorder, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte. All tracks have been remastered.Of the four Kiss solo albums released in 1978, Paul Stanley's was the most Kiss-like. While Gene Simmons and Peter Criss decided to use the opportunity to explore other musical styles, Stanley--like guitarist Ace Frehley--chose to stick to what he did best. A few tracks are of a more epic nature, such as "Tonight You Belong to Me" and "Take Me Away (Together as One)," but for the most part, PAUL STANLEY is just good old straightforward rock & roll. "Move On," "Wouldn't You Like to Know Me," "It's Alright," "Love in Chains," and "Goodbye" are all hard rockers, while the more serene numbers, "Ain't Quite Right" and "Hold Me, Touch Me," fit in with the rest quite well.
