From Ridley Scott, the director of Gladiator and Master of the modern epic, comes this spectacular saga of courage, passion and adventure.

Amidst the pageantry and intrigue of medieval Jerusalem, Orlando Bloom plays Balian, a young blacksmith who, having lost everything, finds honour and redemption on a valient quest. Against staggering odds, Balian battles overwhelming forces to save his people and fulfil his destiny as a true knight.

I have to say that despite Orlando Bloom being very gorgeous, I don't think he was right for this role.
The storyline and locations this film enjoys just didn't seem to match the rather bland and one dimensional acting of Orlando.
Despite that, the direction and other supporting actors still make this a film worth watching.
Good, but could have been better.

Being interested in history of this nature, i thought this DVD looked like it would be a good watch for me. How right i was!!

The film follows Balian as he, along with his father and severl other knights, embarks on a crusade to the Holy land, to try and relieve his late wife's position in hell! On the way he murders a priest and so it begins. His life as a Knight!

I was very, very impressed as to how deep the film is and how it captures the personality, actions and feelings of evey character in the film with precision and accuracy. The battles are stunning, and the expert special effects make the film very impressive.

In Jerusalem, Balian encounters lots of different people. The might King of Jerusalem, crippled by lepracy, Tiberias, a ferocious knight, and Guy de Lusignan, a greedy, bloodthirsty Templar, closely followed by Reynald de Chatillon, possibly one of the most evil men in history! All these people drive Balian to be a "Perfect Knight".

I was hoever, disappointed with the lack of any excitement in the final battle near the ending. I feel it could have been done with alot more effort and the ending seems rushed! Until that it is an excellent film.

In conclusion, Kingdom of Heaven is a marvellous epic and captures the struggle of the Crusaders very well. It shows just how desperatley the knights of Christendom wanted control of Jerusalem, and how they were willing to give there lives for the cause! An epic struggle, and an epic film! Highly reccomended.

Thanks,

I usually like films that deal with war and fighting, but with the unbelievable placing of Orlando Bloom in the lead role, just because he is more popular than Liam neeson ( and younger) He didn't fit my idea of the young knight out to step into his fathers shoes in the crusades. If you are a war film fan then this might not be for you unless you want to modern day version of Zulu with poor acting (exsept Liam) and glossy effects, give me the original Zulu over this any day.

The films follows the story of Balian as he goes from blacksmith in Northern France to heroic knight in Jerusalem. The character development is almost non-existent and soit isimpausible to see how he makes such radical changes to himself and becomes so brave and noble as to be an exceptional knight.

Havng said that, it gives a great view of life in Christian owned Jerusalem that is rarely depicted in film, how accurate it is is questionable, but there are ideals exploredin the film to accompany the action which is very valuable to watch.

The action is intense, brutal and in your face. You won't see knights in shining armour gallantly dispatching evi foes, you see rusty armoured brutal tough men engaged in quite realistic combat. Very authentically done bar Liam Neesons sword fighting lesson wich is full of baloney.

The film isn't afraid to cover the radical islamists of the tme, and their desire for the holy land akin to what is happening now.

The siege battle scenes are phenomenal, and worth seeing the film for.

in fact just writing this review has made me want to stick it on again!

I bought this film as I'm doing a module at my college on the Crusades. Although cinematic adaptions of medieval events have be viewed with care, it is a visual delight to watch.

The historical accuracy, as with most of these types of films, is not great. It's a pity that more time isn't spent on the Battle of Hattin and the events around it are rather far from reality.

But the special effects are wonderful and I feel that the movie does well in the setting, the middle east in the 12th century. Watch it and enjoy it, and afterwards find out what really happened, it is a truely remarkable piece of history.

This is fact based film showing great history between the muslims & christian battles of the past to overthrow jerussalem & gain control. The muslim commander is Salahudin a great warrior of his time who took the muslims to victory after victory, you will see why in the film he was always calm & collected & done what was needed for islam & the muslims not for his own gain or reputation this why the christians fell time & time again in the battle of jerussalem.

This is a good film, but not a great one. Good sense of the period. Even-handed treatment of the Crusades. Orlando Bloom is not bad, though still not the most believable as a swarthy crusader. Liam Neeson is great (as always) and Jeremy Irons is a welcome addition. This is definitely worth watching on DVD.

Constantly amazed at how this sort of offering gets successfully hyped up. Self regarding and unutterably boring. Wooden performances. Crass script. Avoid if possible.

This is a very good film with some beautiful and authentic imagery. The film largerly consists of knights shouting 'its gods will' then going and killing innocent people, which again is authentic. Kingdom of heaven also displays the cultral diversity and politics of jerusalem and does a good job of potraying the knights templar and european knights as power hungry thugs. It also shows Saladin as a wise and peacueful leader which im not sure is entirley realistic but makes a good film.

With historical events being taken and directed in the style of a graphic novel like in 300 watching Kingdom of heaven or Gladiator reminds us how authentic, realistic films are supposed to be done.

Orlando Bloom plays the part well but im unconvinced someone with his slim stature should be cast as a medeival blacksmith.

All in all a very good watch.

Much, much better than expectation, as the reviews were bad. Beautifully and descriptively photographed, great sense of period, agony of Crusades - for both sides. The acting was good, especially Jeremy Irons. Historically a little incorrect in that Balian of Ibelin owned land near Joffa, was married to an ex queen of Jerusalem but not THAT one - he was not a French blacksmith, but the dramatic impact was increased by the change of character. Good.

Good film. Loved Liam Neeson in it, then again, love Liam Neeson in a lot of things.

Due to all the adverts about it prior to it's cinema release I was expecting a lot more from the guy who brough us Gladiator. So I was left feeling... wanting something more.

It was well shot amd the location seemed perfect for it. It's not a bad movie to watch on a day you feel like vegging out.

really enjoyed this movie. The way the movie started in Europe and how dark it was there... and the journey to Jerusalem... just wonderful stuff up to that point.

Liam Neeson, as usual, is just SO GOOD, you wish he had more screen time.

- Orlando Bloom, actually surprisingly, was able to carry the movie as a lead. I was surprised he had the heft to do it, but I agree with the critic who said that the beard helped. He was a man, not a boy.

- Battle scenes... incredible. I was really surprised that they could wow me, since we've been numbed by the quality of battle scenes in so many previous movies, but they did a great job.

Why bother with history when you can just make it up?
Review created: 30/08/09

I'm sorry, but as far as historical epics go this one is particuarly poor. After my first viewing you begin to enjoy the battle scenes and start to grasp the feel of the characters, which in any other 'fictional' film would be quite commendable, but as soon as you pick up a history book, especially any detailing Templar history, then this film becomes a joke.

The main character of Balian (Orlando Bloom) actually existed, but was neither a son of Godfrey or anywhere near Jerusalem when it surrendered to Saladin (He was in Acre) It was actually the Franks (French) who surrendered the city.
The so-called 'evil' Templars who can be seen leading attacks on the Infidel were not actually members of the Knights Templar (such as Guy - the King later on in the film) and non of the horrors inflicted by Saladins' army on the escaping Christians - such as the slavery of any civilian woman or child (and beheading of men) who couldn't pay the due fee to be allowed free passage - where shown or depicted either. The only historical fact that can be taken from this film is that there was actually a place called Jerusalem, and thats about it.

If you are a fan of anti-religion (Christian in particular) pro-conspiracy theories, or simply a fan of Bloom (this is probably his best performance to date, although thats not really saying much) then I recommend this film. But as for me, a historian, I cannot bear this continued drabble of films which do little for history but a lot for the anti-religion, pro-I-beleive-because-it-sounds-interesting-not because-there-are-any-facts conspiracy theorists. Say what you will, but history is beginning to show that science is simply re-inventing and beginning to explain ancient knowledge known for centuries by our esteemed ancestors, so we should stop assuming that they were simple brain-washed thugs and perhaps take a little more of a respectful interest in religions that have existed for hundreds nee thousands of years.

Perhaps its time for a Hollywood director who is neither Jewish or homosexual to be given free-reign on an historical epic, particuarly a WW2 or Crusading movie. Avoid this film if you can.

Miami Vice? More like egg fried rice!

I fell asleep about an hour into this film. I was not really looking forward to watching Miami Vice as Colin Farrell was staring in it and I think he’s a prat but though I would give it a go as Phone Booth was better than I had anticipated. There was big explosions and lots of action but unfortunately The vocal sound quality was atrocious and therefore made it very difficult to understand what was actually going on. (This was a shop bought DVD so must be a problem with the actual film). I have seen home videos with better quality sound. Due to this fact I gave up trying to understand what was happening and left my partner to watch the rest while I used him as a pillow. Fortunately for me he informed that the end was not much better than the beginning, and that my snoring was far more entertaining than the film so I guess that’s not a great advert for Miami Vice.
