It is the early 1800's and King Mongkut of Siam (Yul Brynner) realizes that a good education is necessary to survive and also paramount for the survival of Siam. So he sends off for a teacher for his many offspring.
His choice a widow Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) and her son Louis Leonowens (Rex Thompson).
King Mongkut does not keep a promise of a separate living quarter for Anna and her son. He also is smug and overbearing. This will lead to several things he did not plan on including a Siam's play version of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" With little Lisa on the ice flows.
Mean while The King's son Prince Chulalongkorn (Patrick Adiarte) seems to be more amenable to leaning the ways of the western world.
Can the king save Siam from the imperialists?
Will Anna be a help?
There was an earlier film version of this story "Anna and the King of Siam" with Irene Dunne and Rex Harrison which has a different feel. The other film does not have the advantage of talent music of Rodgers & Hammerstein.

It's always great to see Yul Brynner in the part he was born to play: the stubborn King of Siam. And Deborah Kerr is excellent as the no-nonsense English governess (with the heart of gold) hired to teach the royal children. Very slow by today's standards, the film seems to go on forever - especially in the Uncle Tom's Cabin sequence. But the music! Simply glorious!!! Personal favourite: The March of the Siamese Children. An immortal musical classic.

this has always been a favourite of ours but we had yet to buy it on dvd. this is probably rogers and hamersteins best musical. yul brynner is everything that the king of siam should be. originally the role was meant for rex harrison, cant imagine him as the king though he did do an earlier film about anna and the king but not a musical.anna is played by deborrah kerr though the original role was written for gertrude lawrence who unfortunatly died before screening. kerr however does not do the singing that is down to the great marnie nixon who also did the singing voice for audrey hepburn in my fair lady.
this is a great film with songs that we all know and love. the characters are as familiar to us as our own families. sit the kids down, some popcorn and be enthralled for over 2 hours.

) Unfortunately the film is in widescreen format, so you get the usual blank spaces at the top & bootom of the TV screen, although these can be removed by the zoom, but this probably means you lose some at the edges. It might be our DVD player, but the sound wasn't too good although the subtitles option helps here. Anyway, 'her indoors' likes it and that's the main thing!

) I MUST OF WATCHED THIS ALL TIME CLASSIC SO MANY TIMES I FORGET, I NO THERE ARE REMAKES WITH DIFF STARS ( JODIE FOSTER FOR START ) I LOVED THEM, BUT I ALWAYS COME BACK TO THIS ONE WITH YUL BRYNNER,DEBORAH KERR, ITS JUST A FANTASTIC ALL ROUND FILM, MUSICAL,DANCE,LOVE,RESPECT, BIT OF EVERYTHING FOR EVERYONE, YOU COULD JUST WATCH AND WATCH WITHOUT GETTING BORED, GET THE TISSUES OUT THOU AT THE END,SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS, IT ALSO HAS POWERFUL MESSAGES IN IT, JUST BRILLIANT, A MUST BUY.

an excellent movie for the young or the old. a colourful and traditional tale suitable for all ages. although one of the older movies this withstands the test of time for musicals, as it has a bit of everything, romance, dance, action etc. one for grandma to watch with the children!

I bought this for my Grandaughter because Ive introduced her to the music from the film which I saw many years ago, with Deborah kerr & Yul Bryner. About a month ago the musical was on at our local theatre & we both loved the performance. We often sing the memorable songs together now

the king and iThe item was actually purchased for my mother's christmas. But I watched it to make sure it was okay. It is a timeless classic a good all round family viewing. I like the way it show's how you can get over the cultural barrier and of course peerage

A classic every household should have. Great for the kids to dance around with. Yul is so smooth and sexy and he is fantastic in this film. Recommended.
