Album Notes The former Dire Straits guitarist's fifth solo album, 'Kill To Get Crimson', again showcases his searing guitar tones and homespun songwriting narratives. Featuring the singles 'True Love Will Never Fade' and 'Punish The Monkey', this release was recorded in Knopfler's own London studios. Occasionally it features more traditional instrumentation with the inclusion of John McCusker (a frequent collaborator with Kate Rusby) on fiddle, alluding to the folkier, more cinematic elements of Knopfler's back catalogue. | |||||||||
Reviews I have most of Mark Knopflers music including Dire Straights. This particular album is a far cry away from Marks older stuff. On first play I found it a bit boring, but also very relaxing. After further playings it does grow on you, and is an ideal background to just chill out. People have criticised this album, comparing it to the Dire Straights era, but things move on, and at least Mark continues to experiment and progress to other areas. All in all not a bad sound. An acqired taste, but I like it. If you are not to sure whether to buy it, I suggest that you hear it from someone else first, but don't judge it on first impressions. Report this review Review created: 08/05/08 by: After "Sailing to Philidelphia" and "The Ragpickers Dream" I had great expectations for this album. The first track "True love will Never Fade" is Knopfler at his mellow, "Notting Hillbillies" best. Great, I thought, but sadly, rather than it setting the scene for a great album it's one of the few stand out tracks. All in all : Great for background / quiet Sunday afternoon drives or dinner party intros but a bit samey with little scope for Mark to show his guitar talents. Disappointing - die hard fans only. Knopfler back to his best, tracks The Fizzy and The Still,Let It All go,We can Get Wild are fun ..... the entire album gets better with every play. You begin to notice little lyrical quirks in songs, magic little moments. All in all 5 out of 5 Review ID: 10000000006422079 Was this review helpful? Report this review A new album from Mark Knopfler is usually an event to savour. This one is not. As with so many songwriters, the more albums they produce the less inspired they become. Kill To Get Crimson is packed to the gills with competance but if you are waiting for a great new Knopfler song, you will wait in vain.It is fine for background music but inspired it ain't!
