Album Notes Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Stephen Stills (bass); Lee Keefer (banshee). All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. This David Crosby-produced album is a sparse and beautiful folk record. This was Joni Mitchell's debut, yet already it was apparent that here was an immense lyrical talent. Her great melodic gift developed more fully later on, as these are fairly standard-fare folk items. Still, few writers had used such a conversational style in song, and for that alone, this was a milestone of a record. The listener was encouraged and welcomed into a stream of dialogue and tales without needing to know what they were all about. | |||||||||||||

I don't know who wrote the sleevenotes quoted on the listings for this CD, but how anyone could describe even Joni Mitchell's early songs as 'standard folk fare' is beyond me. Yes, she developed her style as any musician will, but this firt album is full of beautiful, clever songs which are anything but standard. Each is a gem, my personal favourites being the charming 'Sisotowbell Lane', the lovely title track 'Song to a Seagull' and the rather wistful 'Cactus Tree' which would make a good single, I think, even today.
