Album Notes
Full title: Georgia Stomps, Atlanta Struts, And Other Contemporary Dance Favorites.Fahey is a giant among contemporary guitar players. Starting in the early '60s, he made a series of recordings linking the language of country blues guitar to the then-emerging world music scene, creating a legacy of instrumental music later popularized by Leo Kottke (who Fahey originally signed to his Takoma label) and the Windham Hill label. Largely dormant in the '80s, Fahey made a comeback in the '90s, and this release is arguably the best of his records since this return.GEORGIA STOMPS is a live album, and it's also Fahey's first excursion with electric guitar. His electric work can't compare to his legendary acoustic sound, but his playing is in peak form, and the song selection is quite unusual. The CD opens with a medley of folk classic "House of the Rising Sun" and jazzman Artie Shaw's "Nightmare," and closes with a fairly abstract rendition of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo." In between there's an array of obscure blues selections and Fahey originals, all played in stretched out, stream-of-consciousness fashion. This isn't the best introduction to Fahey (start with BLIND JOE DEATH or AMERICA) but for fans it's a fascinating document of a restlessly creative mind.

Editorial Reviews
...Acoustic guitarist Fahey goes electric, swapping his oaken tone for a reverberant shimmer....Fahey's doing what he's always done: painting highly personal soundscapes, using American roots music as his palette. - Rating: A-Magnet (4-5/99, p.68) - ...His sonic portraits never rely on blurry lines to illustrate the concentric circles of motion and being, managing to suggest the ancient, immediate and infinite all at once...The Wire (1/99, p.51) - ...a canvas on which he paints in old and new styles simultaneously....playing with a clean, bright electric sound, broadened out by juddering tremolo....Fahey's bringing it on home again, but this time it all looks subtly different.
