Album Notes
Personnel: John Cale; Dave Young (guitar); James Young (keyboards); Graham Dowdall (percussion); Suzie O'List, Gill O'Donovan (background vocals).Recorded at Strongroom Studios, London, England. After 1984's COMES ALIVE, John Cale entered the studio with an almost entirely new cast of band members and created ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, and album with a heavily keyboard-dominated sound. Written in collaboration with Larry Sloman, the album includes the powerful "Dying on the Vine." A palpable mood of paranoia runs throughout nearly the entire proceedings, one that Cale metamorphoses into a richly elegant proposition. This album stands in contrast to Cale's work in the second half of the '70s. At that time, he was using high decibel levels for cathartic experience; by the time of ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE he was exploring the subtler shadings of dramatic tensions and layered arrangements. The screaming had yielded to the softer shadings of background singers. Cale started his solo career in similar terrain; this return shows what a compelling journey he'd been on.

Editorial Reviews
3 Stars - Good - ...The ballads...hit hardest, conveying themes of urban paranoia, dislocation and a raft of contemporary neuroses against a melodramatic musical backdrop with powerful portenous vocals...
