this , for the uninitiated is the " missing " meatloaf album . once he had charted with bat out of hell(heard of it ? yes , good ) the Meatloaf phenomenon went global with a vengeance ! his management laid out a crippling exhausting 12 months of touring for him , sadly culminating in his voice problems ( to say nothing of drink, drugs and anything else within arms reach ) in short , his vioce was shot to bits and the possibility loomed that he may never sing professionally again .
All the while this was happening , Jim Steinman had the new album written and ready to put on vinyl .
finally realising that if he didnt record it no one might , he decided to go to the studio himself and lay it down ....
the result was fabulous , all the majesty and grandeur of typical meatloaf tracks but with a different voice , a less trained but unusually raw quality to it enhancing the earthiness that some of these songs required ......
all the while still retaining the tongue in cheek humour the pops up regularly in jims songs ,
this is a must for any meatloaf fan , steinman fan , or rock n' roller .........they dont make em like this any more

If you love Bat out of Hell you gotta get this!

It is written and performed by the same guy that wrote Bat Out of Hell and it's basically the same formula for the songs - all operatic over the top production and cheesy American teen angst - but it is excellent!

It was supposed to be Meatloaf's 2nd album but he'd done his voice in that much touring the first album that he couldn't record - or so the story goes - so Jim steps in and decides to do the vocals himself and whilst he isn't 'Meat' he does bring a different vibe to the piece and although he can't sing as well as 'Meat' he does make up for it with real emotion and some of the 'less good' vocals only add to the whole thing.

I couldn't pick out a stand out track as they all of a very high quality in their own way. But it does take me back a I had it on vinyl back in the day and it was the soundtrack for a summer - so it brings back all that teen heartache and newness!

  In your collection for good.

As I was an 80's revival Mod you would probably be surprised to see this in my album collection but it is that Good it crossed the boundaries of acceptability and still remains in my top 10 all time greatest albums.
Whilst listening to it you could be forgiven for thinking of Meatloaf and wondering if he might have done it better but I doubt it as Jim Steinman puts more feeling into it than the big man ever could. If you like the sound of meatloaf (or even Bonnie Tylers 'total eclypse of the heart') then this is a must have.
It needs to be played LOUD to be fully appreciated and the best bit is that there isn't one Bad track.

Bad for Good......ABSOLUTELY GREAT.
