The 80's ...? And some!!

First of all I must admit to being a Tull Fan - bought all the albums, been to see them numerous times etc. etc. However this album was off the graph when it came out and Tull has really not done anything like it before or since.
Completely different from the prog rock/folky/jazz/blues mixture of the rest of their extensive repertoire it encapsulates completely the sound and feel of the time. (I believe Martin Barre - guitarist with the band since 1969 - regards this as his favorite Tull album.) Here we have layers of keyboard effects, no drummer (just a machine) and a collection of songs that can be strung together to make a James Bond movie. The flute is still there and Ian Anderson's vocal performance is at his absolute peak. All the signature Tull techniques are also present - complicated riffs, funny timing, lyrical innuendo, but in a quintisential 80's style. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that someone had phoned Anderson up and bet him he couldn't outdo the Human League, Depeche Mode and Ultravox. Guess what - he won.
Under Wraps is unmistakably Tull but in a very 'modern' way (for the time). Well worth buying if you are a Tull fan - oh and if you like the Human League, Depeche Mode and Ultravox this could be your way into prog rock as well!!
