Album Notes The young Italian ensemble Jennifer Gentle have always taken a more left-of-center approach to their brand of neo-psychedelia. In a detour from the off-kilter post-Syd Barrett pop of their Sub Pop releases, NEW ASTRONOMY delves further afield from standard 1960s-influenced pop-song form toward genuine acid-damaged experimental folk. Dedicated to Italian astronomer Giovanni Paneroni--an eccentric amateur astronomer who sought to refute Copernican heliocentrism--the album runs the gamut from grainy lo-fi dronescapes to fractured acoustic sketches. It's as appropriate a soundtrack to astronomical dreaming as has ever been conceived.
