Jeff Wayne - The War Of The Worlds

The War of the Worlds is a great film. The book is even better. I read it for the first time 10 years ago, and 2 years later, discovered we owned the war of the worlds musical on cassette. The musical is brilliant. Rock, techno, electra dance, whatever category it falls under, it is amazing. 6 years after, i purchased the remastered version on CD and fell in love with it yet again. The film was released and the musical went live. I saw it and decided to buy this deluxe edition on Ebay. This edition contains the original 2 CDs along with the 'Ullabadulla' remixes on another CD, and a further 3 CDs worth of revisited versions of the musical. As well as all this, a DVD is included about how it was made and it is all presented in a stunning hardback book, complete with 80 pages of information on the musical.

For those of you new to this amazing masterpiece from Jeff Wayne, I advise getting the original CDs on Ebay, and possibly the book if you like a good bit of literature (My favourite book i should mention). If and when this pulls you into the War of the Worlds phenomenom then you should return to Ebay, and try and find this amazing bit of musical history.

Thanks for reading, and happy listening. mastersummoner =P

War of the Worlds Box set

I'll be brief- If you're a War of the Worlds anorak, this is a must. It is superbly presented and if you have a SACD player and surround sound it is a whole new listening experience. Mine cost £35 new and I would've been impressed if I'd paid double.

A must for any Jeff Wayne fan

After looking for something a bit different than the usual War of the Worlds memorabilia, I found this gem on Ebay. The package consists of 6 CDs and a DVD which give access to hard to find material including interviews and remixes. That's not all, the whole package is presented in a lovely book with original prints and artwork that were made for the original release. Additional prints are included in this book which give an even greater insight in to Jeff Wayne's version of H.G. Wells' story. The DVD is a great insight in to how the album was produced and Jeff Wayne's life in general.

An awesome box-set of this classic work
Review created: 02/03/08(updated 02/03/08)

I first heard this album when my dad bought the original, vinyl, version back in the 1970s and I had always intended to buy it on CD but only recently discovered this Collector's Edition.

What you get is six CDs and one DVD documentary.

The first two of the CD are, naturally enough, the actual work itself. However, you actually get two version on the same CD! How clever is that?!!

One is the standard "stereo" version, albeit in re-mastered format. (ie they've tweaked it a bit for modern systems!)

The other version is playable on enhanced, 5.1 surround Super-Audio CD systems. I don't know what that is but, of course, there's a Wiki entry for it ;-)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Audio_CD

I can't say anything about that version though as I don't have the necessary equipment to play it on.

The other four CDs contain supplementary material relating to the main feature.

The first is the 'remixes' album originally released as "ULLAdubULLA" back in the late 1990s. Again, this has been 'enhanced' for this special box-set; but still only in stereo, not SACD!

The other three CDs are "original studio out-takes" that have been specially compiled from the master tapes of the recording sessions; including original radio ads for both the WOTW album and the (previously un-heard) 1969 radio advert for Lego toys that eventually became "Forever Autumn". I kid you not; it's on CD4!

The big surprise for me was not the CDs or the DVD but the packaging. Let me explain.

I was expecting a CD case-sized box-set with perhaps a little booklet. What I received was a vinyl album-sized hard-cover 78-page book with lots of back-ground information on the history of both the recorded project and the original HG Wells novel that inspired it Also, information on the spin-off singles, PC games, etc.

All this *plus* detailed track listings and a complete transcript of the entire work.

I can't think of anything they haven't included!

This really is an excellent tribute to a classic album.
