It's the story of Jason (Todd Armstrong), a fearless sailor and explorer, who returns to the kingdom of Thessaly after a 20-year voyage to make his rightful claim to the throne. But to do so, Jason must first find the magical Golden Fleece. He selects a crew and with the help of Hera, Queen of the Gods, sets sail in search of the Fleece. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydra, a huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons.

This film is a classic. The special effects for when this film was made are fabulous. I know it has been on tv a number of times, (at Christmas), but it is still worth watching. For anyone who has not seen it, I recommend that you do. The re-makes of Jason and the Argonauts are ok, but will NEVER be as good as this.
It is in my top ten of films.

In my opinion this has to be the best Greek Mythology film ever. I remember watching it at school and it brought the fairly dull subject, Classical Studies, to life for me.

I like the brightness and sunshine in the film, it is so Greece. So many modern films are made in half light or even the dark, as was a later version of a Greek Myth, the Clash of the Titans.

The special effects are still impressive more than 30 years later and I can watch this film over and over again. It is a great teaching tool as well for Key Stage 2 History, The Ancient Greeks. It isn't too violent yet is full of action. A well balanced film for the whole family.

  Oldie but still impresses

Those under the age of twenty who watch this DVD may wonder what all the fuss is about, as Ray Harryhausen's stop motion animations, that make this film such a winner, lack the smooth flow of today's CGI offerings. They still look impressive though, and have cast a spell over watchers for decades. The skeletal army rising from the soil still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. This DVD deserves a wider audience among the younger generation. A pre-requisite to enjoy many films is the suspension of belief, and if the young can also reduce their expectations in terms of the film's animation, they too will fall under it's spell, and enjoy the movie for years to come.

  Jason & The Argonauts
Review created: 18/03/09

A great, lively, fun adaptation of the very enjoyable classical adventure yarn, Jason & the Golden Fleece - thanks to Ray Harryhausen's fabulous special effects in 1963 - (although look a bit dated now, thanks to computer graphics wizadry of today)
A fun film from start to finish, a great cast and the kind of special effects that made Ray Harryhausen a legend in his own time. (He went on to make the famous One Million Years B.C. (1966) and Clash Of The Titans (1981)).

I bought this DVD bacause my daughter is doing a project on it in her literacy class at school (on this year's curriculum for Year 5), and felt that by watching the film, would bring the myth to life. The story is taken from the Greek legend of the search for the golden fleece, immortalised in the epic poem the 'Argonautica', by Apollonius of Rhodes (who lived in the third century BC). But this film does not stick to the myth exactly - it's an adventure movie after all.

The titular Jason (Armstrong) is the only surviving son of Aristo. Prophesy declares that he will one day rule Thessaly, which is currently ruled by Pelias, the murderer of Jason's father and sister (though Jason doesn't know this). When Jason saves Pelias from drowning, the king recognises his potential deposer. To get rid of Jason, Pelias convinces him to undertake a dangerous quest - to retrieve the fabled, magical Golden Fleece. Jason recruits the finest crew and has a vessel built by master shipbuilder Argos (Naismith), which is named the 'Argo'. Among Jason's crew are the brawny Hercules (Green) and the brainy Hylas (Cairney). To improve the odds of success somewhat, Hera (Blackman), queen of the gods, intervenes, providing her protection. The boys are going to need it, as their journey will include encounters with a bronze titan, flying harpies, the seven-headed hydra and, everybody's favourite, the warrior skeletons. I won't give away the ending...watch it for yourself in fabulous technicolour!

My daughter had wanted this film after watching it at school, I was very pleased with the picture quality of it. She has sat for hours watching the film over again. She likes the scene with the skeletons. Can't really say there is a bad bit in this film. Very pleased, and so is my daughter.

Classic Greek Mythology & The Best Special Effects
Review created: 28/06/08

Bought this as I especially enjoy the special effects made by the master of the genre, Ray Harryhausen. It is good family viewing, and a very good story, plus the extra bits about Ray Harryhausen are superb. He is definitely the person of whom all the rest look up to. Also he took ages to make the skeletons and other creatures look real. Definitely a film to have in your library. The quality of the film is superb and those locations, wow!
