Jason & The Argonauts

A great, lively, fun adaptation of the very enjoyable classical adventure yarn, Jason & the Golden Fleece - thanks to Ray Harryhausen's fabulous special effects in 1963 - (although look a bit dated now, thanks to computer graphics wizadry of today)
A fun film from start to finish, a great cast and the kind of special effects that made Ray Harryhausen a legend in his own time. (He went on to make the famous One Million Years B.C. (1966) and Clash Of The Titans (1981)).
I bought this DVD bacause my daughter is doing a project on it in her literacy class at school (on this year's curriculum for Year 5), and felt that by watching the film, would bring the myth to life. The story is taken from the Greek legend of the search for the golden fleece, immortalised in the epic poem the 'Argonautica', by Apollonius of Rhodes (who lived in the third century BC). But this film does not stick to the myth exactly - it's an adventure movie after all.
The titular Jason (Armstrong) is the only surviving son of Aristo. Prophesy declares that he will one day rule Thessaly, which is currently ruled by Pelias, the murderer of Jason's father and sister (though Jason doesn't know this). When Jason saves Pelias from drowning, the king recognises his potential deposer. To get rid of Jason, Pelias convinces him to undertake a dangerous quest - to retrieve the fabled, magical Golden Fleece. Jason recruits the finest crew and has a vessel built by master shipbuilder Argos (Naismith), which is named the 'Argo'. Among Jason's crew are the brawny Hercules (Green) and the brainy Hylas (Cairney). To improve the odds of success somewhat, Hera (Blackman), queen of the gods, intervenes, providing her protection. The boys are going to need it, as their journey will include encounters with a bronze titan, flying harpies, the seven-headed hydra and, everybody's favourite, the warrior skeletons. I won't give away the ending...watch it for yourself in fabulous technicolour!
