Cox & Box + Trial By Jury. Sullivan / Burnand / Gilbert

Single CD which comes with a booklet ( in English, German and French !)giving the historical detailsof the works plus both librettos. Unfortunately the dialogue of Cox and Box is omitted.
This CD offers a rare chance to hear Cox and Box with some previously cut material restored, the finale being the most notable. The original dialogue is omitted. I think this a pity, though many people wwwill not miss the awful puns and long winded Mid-Victorian humour. It has been replaced by brief descriptive passages spoken by Bouncer.
The second work, Gilbert and Sullivan's one act "Trial By Jury" is a complete performance as this work has no dialogue.
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Richard Hickox is in great form. The overture to Cox and Box is especially rousing. Donald Maxwell is a sly and manipulative Bouncer.James Gilchrist and Neal Davies make a splendidly laddish Box and Cox.
The wit of W.S.Gilbert shines out in this performance of Trial By Jury. James Maxwell makes a splendid judge. The youthful soprano of Rebecca Evans is perfect for the role of Plaintiff. Mention must be made of Matthew Brook whose self-regarding Counsel is a true Gilbertian delight.
This CD is a must for all G&S anoraks. Grab it when you can.
