Album Notes Personnel: Erlend Oye, Jenny Lewis. On his initial solo outing as James Figurine, electronica artist Jimmy Tamborello--also known as Dntel, one half of the Postal Service, and one third of Figurine--unveils a collection of minimalist, groove-centric synth-pop tunes. MISTAKE, Tamborello's first major undertaking since the Postal Service's hugely popular GIVE UP, finds him scaling back the former album's catchy melodies in favor a more rhythmic, dance-floor-oriented sound, as revealed on the pulsing, cell-phoned-themed "55566688833." While numerous guests turn up, including Jenny Lewis, the record's standout track, "All the Way to China," features the easy-going vocals of Erlend Oye (Kings of Convenience), resulting in a sprightly tune that wouldn't sound out of place on one of Oye's own solo releases. Although it doesn't reach the great heights of Tamborello's Postal Service work, MISTAKE succeeds in mining an enjoyably grounded electro-vein.
Editorial Reviews The record is Tamborello's most ambient, as he manipulates the ethereal voices of his guest vocalists so their glassy tones are gracefully woven into the mix... CMJ
