JBL Grand Touring GTO936 Coaxial Car Speaker

Its not like the good old days, is it? 30 years ago the RMS wattage rating of a speaker was what that speaker could easily cope with before distorting.
It seems we are in an interim period where Chinese made speakers (I think they just might all be) do not meet their RMS specifications.
(Peak Power is really a useless figure in practice at which you blow your speakers.)
I have found that even well branded speakers like Sony & Pioneer need to have an RMW wattage rating above that of your amplifier output. That way, you get a much better quality sound output.
Rates at 100w RMW, these top of the range GTO936 speakers could handle about 80w RMS. They offer a good sound at under £100.
Always look for speaker offered without postage. Their weight often hinders a good sale price so if you can collect you can get a real bargain.
I found a pair of new JBL GTO936 for £5. They retail for over £40 at discount outlets. They replaced a pair of top quality Pioneer speakers with too low a wattage for my Sony XPLOD system.

The JBL have a crossover capacitor builtin which the Pioneer speakers did not have. This allows better distribution of sound between speakers handling differing frequencies without complex wiring (i.e. 6x9 mid range with separate tweeters)

I would still maintain that Pioneer & Sony are top car speaker brands. For a bargain, look for ex Honda & BMW OEM fitments which sellers dont recognise as Pioneer (HONDA) or Sony (BMW).
