Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Donald Sutherland, Edward Norton, Charlize Theron
Director: F. Gary Gray

I groaned at the prospect of an Italian Job remake. I envisioned a bunch of Hollywood geeks with dollar signs for eyes trying to steal some of the original film’s thunder. Thankfully though, all that connect the two films are monikers and Minis.

Charlie Croker (Wahlberg) and John Bridger (Sutherland) lead a motley bunch of expert thieves into Venice and steal $35 million in gold bars. But, the gang are quickly double-crossed by one of their own, the devious Steve (Norton). One year later, Charlie has tracked him down and is out for revenge, enlisting the help of John’s daughter, Stella (Theron). What follows is a satisfying rush of retribution and action.

I’m very happy to say this film delivers the goods, thanks mostly to its cast. The Italian Job features a charismatic ensemble with some great dialogue and funny moments between them.

And of course, the film doesn’t skimp on the element which made the original such a cult classic – the antics of the new Mini Cooper. Well choreographed and skillful driving grace the thrilling high octane sequences.

The end result is an entertaining, excellently paced flick combining a likeable cast with some clever and meticulous scripting. This is Gone In Sixty Seconds (but better) meets Oceans Eleven. With a damn cool car.
