I must admit I wasn't expecting much but I thought I'd give it a go. WOW! What a great surprise. This film is well worth watching. The story is an interesting one & if you mix that with the action then it makes for a good film. I won't say much as I'd hate to give anything away. The only thing in my mind that spoiled it though was the shameless product placement. If you can get pass that though you will enjoy this movie.

Synopsis
In this action thriller from director Michael Bay ('Pearl Harbour', 'Armageddon'), survivors of global contamination live in a sterile, self-contained world where their every move is monitored. The rules are easy: be pleasant, refrain from asking questions, and don't rock the boat. Everything they need is provided for them, from the white uniforms that magically appear in their closets, to their customized cafeteria-style meals. The survivors all eagerly await their big payoff: winning the lottery and being sent to The Island, the only remaining untainted land in the world. But Lincoln Six-Echo (Ewan McGregor) yearns for more from his life and begins to wonder what really lies outside the thick walls. When his best friend, Jordan Two-Delta (Scarlett Johansson), wins the lottery, he knows that he has to find out the truth about their world before she departs. What he finds is terrifying enough to send Lincoln and Jordan fleeing from the facility to the real world where they quickly discover that they are clones, and that both The Island and global contamination are a ruse. The clones sole purpose is to be harvested for replacement parts when their sponsors need them. With his business now in jeopardy, Dr. Merrick (Sean Bean), the founder of the cloning company, hires a crack team led by Albert Laurent (Djimon Hounsou) to track down his escaped product. Wild chase scenes through Los Angeles circa 2050 are punctuated by high-tech transportation as Lincoln and Jordan run for their lives and try to assimilate into a world that is completely foreign to them. The futuristic set design and visual effects are particularly impressive. McGregor and Johansson both expertly communicate the human element and desire for life that has developed in the two clones, while still finding humour and awe in their childlike naivety.

Review
I am surprised this didn't do better at the cinema, starring two great main actors with a strong supporting cast as well this is a good action film with a good twist! I saw the film knowing nothing about the storyline, it's set in the future in a space age facility on earth protecting the last few survivors from the deadly contaminated atmosphere outside. Their lives from diet, clothes, jobs are all set out for them as they live an almost brainwashed existence. The only highlight is winning the lottery where you get to go to the island, a paradise and only safe place to exist out of the main complex. However Ewan McGregors character starts to ask questions about their way of life!!
This is a slow film to start of with but the second half more than makes up for this with some great chase scenes using some futuristic style vehicles! If you like a film with a good twist or great big budget action scenes, or a fan of Scarlett Johasson you'll love this! 8/10

i would love to say, as a ewan mcgregor fan, that this is an amazing film, however, it isn't.

just to try and confuse you, the film is about 2 clones, made for transplants from their "investor",who've escaped from their cloning facility to find that they are clones of real people in a world that they didnt know existed. they origionaly believed that the world was infected by some deadly virus that they had survived , hence why they must stay in their facility.their aim is to win the "lottery" where whoever wins gets to go to The Island which, suposidly , is the only place left thats not been infected. however theyre actually about to transplant an organ/baby/skin to their "investor".

the story can be quite confusing and most certainly at times unbelievable. e.g. who's going to be able to fall of a skyscraper and survive, oh ewan mcgregor and scarlett johansson of course!!

However, if your only interseted in masses of brilliant special effects, explosions and death defying stunts, Michael Bay most definately delivers!

As the film opens we see survivors of global contamination living in a self-contained controlled world where their every move is monitored. A kind of enforced utopia. Everything you ever need is provided for you and there is absolutely nothing for anyone to worry, or think, about. But it doesn't add up. McGregors character starts to question his surroundings and that's when it all kicks off and gets cool.

So this is a suprisingly good movie. Neither Armchair McGregor or Ms Johansson are ever going to win any Oscars for this, but, the former jedi's wince inducing American accent aside, they both put in sterling performances. Sean Bean is great as the menacing baddie and Steve Buscemi is, as always, fantastic in his cameo as a piece of twentieth century trailer park trash. So basically you have great sci fi effects, a decent story, a breathtaking chase and witty dialogue all competantly put together in a nice watchale package. A film well worthy of a viewing.

When you add up all the best things about The Island, you might just conclude that there's hope yet for Hollywood's most critically reviled hit-maker, Michael Bay. Recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct this lavish and often breathtaking sci-fi action thriller, Bay rises to the occasion with an ambitious production that is, by his standards (and compared to Bay's earlier hits like The Rock and Armageddon), surprisingly intelligent as it explores the repercussions of cloning in a sealed-off society where humans are cultivated for spare parts, surrogate parenthood, and full-body replacements for wealthy clientele. But when two of the clones (Ewan McGregor, Scarlett Johanssen) begin to question their fate and the motives of their keepers, they escape into the real world and The Island becomes just another Michael Bay action packed thriller. With elaborate chase scenes and a high-tech feasts dazzle the eye, there's no denying that, in many ways, it's Bay's best film to date.

There's nothing wrong with The Island, and I enjoyed the well-paced action scenes and special effects. But there's little tension and the plot is very old fashioned.

  The Island-a fantastic sci-fiction film

I was surprised when i first watch this film,The Island how good it might be,but it exceed my exceptions,Ewan Mcgregor and Scarlett Johnson simply outshine most of the cast members.
It even includes one of my favourite actors non other than Sean Bean.Yes he is in it too.
Ewan Mcgregor and Mrs Johnson play residents of a very isolated, high tech compound. They discover that they are part of a experiment and a government coverup and also discover that they are in fact not real people but in fact duplicate copies of clients who have paid over 4 million pounds for the privilege of harvesting body parts from the said copies.
When they discover that they are worth more dead than alive Ewan Mcgregor playing the clone decides to escape with the Mrs Johnson Character to find the real clients in the outside world
The end result a tracking team is sent out to stop them telling the truth at whatever cost
I would highly recomend this film has it has everything a decent storyline, action, car chases, shoot outs, romance etc

This film is simply awesome.

Clever, and Scarlett Johanson is ridiculously hot in this, for some reason even moreso in this than any other of her films.

But it's awesome even regardless of that.

Very good sci-fi story -rather reminiscent of " Logans Run" an early idea.Ewan MacGregor is more believable in this as an action type than the terrible Star Wars prequels. The special effects are well done and it is a tense and well thought out story.Sean Bean is a committed villain but Scarlet Johansson is really just required to run.

  Good demo disk
Review created: 27/06/08

This film was criticised when first released for being a rip off of Logans Run.
That almost caused me to avoid it and miss out on a rattling good film.

Yes there is a small element of the film that borrows from Logan's Run - it is difficult to be 100% original in a genre like science fiction. But that is well short of the full story.

Sean Bean is truely mesmerising as the totaly amoral doctor knowingly growing sentient clones in order to harvest their body parts for rich clients.

The car chase is truely spectacular and has become my favorite demo piece. The noise of the railway bogie wheels being dropped off the back of the lorry into the path of pursuing vehicles is stunning and the resulting mayhem is remarkably well filmed .... and comes over as believable as most of this was done in the real world rather than by CGI. High Def versions real add to the chase sequence and this can be seen in the little details such as the head up display in the hoverbike. There is an extra that demonstrates how this was done. I dont normally bother with extras (they tend to be full of mutual backslapping) but this one is worthwhile.

Part of the film (supossedly LA) seems to have been filmed in Mitchigan. In particular there is a wonderful old delapidated building being used as a car park. The same building also appears in Transformers.

Other highlights
Recognising the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada (I'm British but love this area of the states)

Bad points:
Product placement is so blatant it becomes a joke! The depiction of falling off the building logo and surviving by landing on scaffolding and wire mesh should carry a health warning... do not try this at home because you will be dead and in lots of small pieces!
Is it me or does the music accompanying the final scene borrow heavily from a Gladiators theme?

  Exciting and intense
Review created: 06/06/08(updated 07/06/08)

I definitely enjoyed it. Although trailers and plot summaries gave away a lot of the story, I was still surprised by its intensity. An early scene involving two of the lottery winners continues to haunt me, as does a later discussion of what it means to be branded "less than human". The action sequences had me gripping the arms of my chair. I thought Jordan and Lincoln's innocence was very well-done and appropriate for the life they had led. Parts of "The Island" reminded me of "Brave New World", other parts were similar to "Logan's Run" and I was even reminded in a small way of "The Matrix" - but none of the similarities seemed like cheap imitations, more like an expansion of an older theme. Overall it was a very good movie
