I first watched this film at the cinema, where all good films should be judged because at the end of the day, its cinemas that films are designed for and found the film intriguing, i must admit i did not see the twist coming, but i also found it a bit boring and unimaginitive, denzel washington shines again as an actor but its certinatly nothing compared to the brilliant and gripping "man on fire"

`Inside Man' is a good film. It's essentially a standard hostage situation thriller that wasn't over the top. From the moment it begins, there is clearly an urban vibe; the shots of Manhattan, not to mention the movie being billed as "A Spike Lee joint" give it a grittier tone. Do not let these minor touches fool you; as the movie progresses, it helps to not go in with preconceived notions of the typical Spike Lee movie. The camera shot changes every five seconds. Normally this would just annoy me, but the editor managed to do this without wasting a single one of those five second shots, and with great accompanying music it was actually one of my favorite opening sequences ever.

Clive Owen is great as, a "not your everyday bank robber," he's becoming one of my favorite actors. Denzel Washington played the lead role of the perceptive (if slightly jaded) police-detective. He gives us an incredibly performance in spite of the fact that he's playing a cop for what seams like the 11th time in his past 12 films. It's an interesting story with some decent twists and better than average dialogue. Jodie Foster is disappointingly underused as Madeline, so to with Christopher Plummer as Arthur. Willem Dafoe flounders in the background, it looks like he doesn't know why he's there. Chiwetel Ejiofor delivers one of the better performances, yet not his best from his other recent film. The dialogue in the movie is good. There's some humorous and great lines that come out of the character's mouths.

What I liked about Inside Man was the style it was made. It is choppy, but not so much, you get a sense of tension, and it seems very high paced. The plot is good, and very intriguing. There are some things you have to figure out throughout the film, which makes it more interesting. My only problem was that after the bank robbery was over, the film continued for another half hour, and it started to drag a bit.

This the latest and most successful movie from director Spike Lee sees him reteam with his Malcolm X star Denzel Washington in this ok tale of a bank robbery in NY,the plot as such has Clive Owen as the main villain of a gang that take over a bank and Washington is the hostage negotiator that has to deal with the aftermath.
It soon becomes clear that there are ulterior motives and that there are things in one of the banks safety deposit boxes which need to stay hidden, the movie does get a bit weird and especially the last 20 minutes do not feel right and could have quite easily been chopped out or dovetailed in a quarter of the time, but this is a watchable thriller with a good cast,Christopher Plummer is the CEO of the bank with the secrets that need to stay hidden and an under used Jodie Foster as a mysterious 'fixer'who tries to get to the box before the robbers do.In all its Spike Lees most commercial movie ever and one to watch but dont think too hard.

Confused and confusing story about a bizarre bank robbery, with more twists and turns than a screwdriver. Denzel Washington is wasted as a top cop. Spike Lee directed. Too clever for its own good.

..yet again, Spike take another departure from his natural background

Its good, varied, unsual photography but it's not excellent
The Main twist has been used before on a international relase a few years ago, buth theres enough their to entertain & will let down very few
The Script's not watertight either,..but you won't notice until aftwerwards when you think about the plot...

a solid 7/10 (8 if you've only seen hollywood films & nothing else)

Inside Man a Spike Lee film

The movie begins with four people, dressed in painters' clothes, enter a bank in Manhattan. Once in position, the bank robbers take about 50 customers and staff hostage and head for the vault. NYPD hostage negotiator Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) arrives on the scene of the surrounded bank to attempt to get the bank personal and customers out safely before things turn even worse than they already are. This becomes a tough job as the leader of the bank robbers, Dalton Russell (Clive Owen), turns out to be a very smart individual who has everything planned to perfection and throws up surprise after surprise for Frazier and his men. But while the people around Frazier are slowly getting more and more nervous, he himself does not lose his mind, and begins a high stakes battle of wits with Russell. Things are further complicated when a mysterious woman (Jodie Foster) is introduced to Frazier by his authorities. She has her own agenda and wants to protect something that is hidden in one of the safety deposit boxes within the bank and she will stop at nothing to force Frazier to let her get inside.

This all sounds like an intriguing storyline for a thriller, but the movie goes further than just having an interesting plot. While it hits all the right notes when it comes to keeping you guessing about what is really going on, it is also very successful in mixing the grittier moments with funny ones but in a way that doesn’t deflate the tension. Washington's Frazier is an intense but laconic individual, who has a permanent smirk on his face but who reads the bank robbers intentions better than anybody else, while Owen is charismatic and fascinating as the mastermind behind the bank robbery. Jodie Foster's role is potentially fascinating however she doesn’t really get the chance to do anything with it other than look cool and act tough. All in all an excellent film which any lover of this genre will thoroughly enjoy.

  The Inside Man DVD

I watched this film last night. The film started off brilliantly and there was some excellent acting. I found I was getting quite bored about half way through the film and felt really disappointed. This film had been recommended to me by friends who really loved it; unfortunately I didn't feel the same way.
I love anything else with Denzel Washington but I thought this film in no way compares with the fantastic Man on Fire.

  GOOD FILM, POOR ENDING

Saw this film on a whim really and am extremely pleased that I did. I was entertained throughout and spent most the film trying to guess the next move. Washington and Owen are excellent in the quirky kind of roles we've seen them in before; Foster plays a ever-so-slightly unusual character for her and whilst she's good, she didn’t convince me of the pit-bull persona to 100%. Spike Lee throws in just enough of an element of social history & conscience to add an extra dimension to the plot and elevate this above being a just a ‘good’ heist film. Thoroughly recommend adding this one to your selection, I just can’t get rid of a nagging thought in the back of my head that I’ve seen the twist at the end somewhere before... hmmm.

Cracking idea for a film. A bank robbery with a very clever twist eventually a few telegraphed cliches but hey its Hollywood, cast not at their very best but then thats very high with Washington Foster and Owen. Not a bad way of spending an evening (thats a bit of an understatement). Didnt even mind paying to see it at the cinema and more than willing to watch it again

  inside man
Review created: 29/05/09

An intelligent thriller with a healthy few twists up its sleeve, The Inside Man marks strong, although hardly career-best, work from all concerned.

The plot is simple, and hardly fresh. On one side, you have a sophisticated team who walk into a bank, take everyone hostage and issue demands. On the other, you have a team of cops trying to apprehend those responsible and get the hostages out safely. In the middle, you have the owner of the bank, who's willing to bring in a bit of extra help to get the situation resolved. And yet what could have been a standard two-dimensional Hollywood blockbuster gets brains and substance thanks to those in front of and behind the camera.

The talent in front is led by a consummate Denzel Washington, as the cop leading the situation. Then there's the increasingly impressive Clive Owen and the always-excellent Jodie Foster, with sterling support from the likes of Christopher Plummer and Willem Dafoe.

Behind the camera, much has been made of the fact that this is the least Spike Lee-like film that Spike Lee has directed, yet that misses the point. The Inside Man sees a skilful, diligent and clever director utterly comfortable with what's going on, and wringing out plenty from the simple premise.

It's not a flawless film by any means: the last reel doesn't quite match up to what preceded it, and the script doesn't really get you near the skin of the characters (even if it does serve up some delicious, not entirely expected moments). Yet as heist movies go, this is one of the better examples of recent times, with plenty of reasons to recommend it.

  A beautifully crafted film
Review created: 10/05/08

You might chance upon this film for a number of reasons. Most likely you are attracted to one of the big names - Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, Jodie Foster or even the slightly more esoteric Clive Owen. What you might find is a film that works beautifully without relying too much on the aforementioned glitterati. Sure, the mighty cast is acting its socks off, but the real star here is the plot which twists and turns and delivers what could be a tight little play, with some truly big ideas, dressed up as a blockbuster. A great film that delivers on all levels.

Probably the ultimate bank heist film. Denzel Washington is great as the police man in charge outside. But Clive Owen steals the film as the criminal mastermind behind the heist. Jodie Foster give her usual excellent performance in a supporting role. In fact the whole cast (mostly unnamed) deserve a round of applause for their excellent performances.
You may gather that I thought this film was one of the best.
