Album Notes N.E.R.D is the alternate name for hip-hop producers The Neptunes.N.E.R.D.: Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, Shay.Spymob: John Ostby (vocals, piano); Eric Fawcett (vocals, drums); Brent Paschke (guitar); Christian Twigg (bass). Additional personnel includes: Lee Harvey, Vita, Pusha T, Kelis, Tammy Lucas, Latrelle Simmons, Malice (vocals).N.E.R.D (No-one Ever Really Dies) is a project based around the hip hop production team of the Neptunes, (Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo) whose work with such luminaries as Jay-Z, Mystikal, Kelis, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and No Doubt has made them one of the most sought after duos on the pop/hip-hop axis. IN SEARCH OF... goes beyond hip-hop, however, conjuring the spirits of 70's R&B and fusing them with '70s rock in a compelling mix that recalls the early-'90s hip-hop experimentation of Basehead's main man Mike Ivey, whose PLAY WITH TOYS remains one of the great undiscovered albums of that decade. The album-opening "Things Are Getting Better" eases us in with a fairly run-of-the-mill gangsta scenario, but things rapidly start getting weird with the Funkadelicized '70s funk of "Brain"--though the territory is familiar, N.E.R.D play with our preconceptions, creating a dreamlike soundscape. Elsewhere "Provider" recalls Donny Hathaway in its mix of gritty lyrics and airy arrangements, while "Truth Or Dare," featuring the duo's protege Kelis, is mad, bad, sexy, and probably dangerous to know. With its wide-ranging mixed bag of influences on naked display, IN SEARCH OF... is that irresistible artifact--the sound of talented artists crossing barriers and confounding expectations. Reviews Review created: 28/08/08 by: In Search Of... switches gears (it does this a lot, paralleling the highs and lows of steady coke use), with the light and funky “Things Are Getting Better.” Here’s where the lyrical genius of Pharrell really shines through: he’s lying throughout much of the album. The lyrics aren’t really innovative by themselves – they’re mostly trite clichés. But that’s why they work: Pharrell doesn’t mean anything. He’s just parroting empty maxims to please his lover, who is about to walk out on him. “Things are really getting better,” he croons. “We’ll see the light.” But this album has only just begun, and we haven’t yet plumbed the depths of the Neptunes’ coked-out odyssey. “Brain” is a catchy, stuttery song, featuring a vocal glissando almost identical to Britney Spears’ similarly-debauched “I’m a Slave 4 U” (another Neptunes production). “Brain” evokes a detached paranoia, before descending into nonsense. “Do you really want to hurt me? If you do there is no pain. Do I really even love you? Or do I just love your bra-a-a-ain?” Pharrell is all apologies again with the bluesy “Provider,” offering up excuse after excuse for his lifestyle. A cheery bossa-nova bridge implies that Pharrell may be conjuring up other emotions besides the blues while he recalls the previous night’s insanity. Brilliant, Great Album !
