A great ensemble cast, made up mostly of character actors you've seen in numerous films but can't quite place the name. A great idea - ten travellers stranded in a motel being killed off one by on...but by who?.
I'm just not sure the director has achieved everything he set out. James Mangold shows little of the craft that was so prevalent in 'Copland', with the characterisation and story cuts so slight and rapid.
Yes, there are some rather good set-pieces, but i think the film ultimately suffers from it's 15 certification, as maybe a bit more on the gore quotient would have given it more of an edge. Nevertheless, there are several twists, (not all you can see coming) and the atmosphere is staged in the creepiest motel since Psycho. For all its faults, its still a good way to spend 90 minutes on any evening and a film i'm glad to have in my personal collection.
This film though does have 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound and is presented in 2.40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen in both it's Theatrical and Extended Versions (both included on this DVD). Packed with special features, including an two commentaries, deleted scenes and an alternate ending - this DVD has been put together extremely well.
All round i'd actually give this 3.5 out of 5 which seems a more realistic rating than the 5/5 ratings you see for every film you look at. Happy viewing.
