On a rain drenched night a group of strangers find themselves holed up in a remote desert motel. All have their reasons for being there, and all of them want to get away as soon as possible, the only problem is the rain has blocked all the roads and cut off all communication. As the strangers get to know each other an odd series of connections and coincidences begins to appear, everyone has the same date of birth and each is seemingly hiding a secret. Things turn from bad to worse though when people start to disappear and it begins to dawn on everyone that one of them is the killer.
TRUELY A MUST SEE FILM

Great ensemble casting, Great Idea ....so-so execution?
Review created: 29/08/06(updated 29/08/06)

A great ensemble cast, made up mostly of character actors you've seen in numerous films but can't quite place the name. A great idea - ten travellers stranded in a motel being killed off one by on...but by who?.

I'm just not sure the director has achieved everything he set out. James Mangold shows little of the craft that was so prevalent in 'Copland', with the characterisation and story cuts so slight and rapid.

Yes, there are some rather good set-pieces, but i think the film ultimately suffers from it's 15 certification, as maybe a bit more on the gore quotient would have given it more of an edge. Nevertheless, there are several twists, (not all you can see coming) and the atmosphere is staged in the creepiest motel since Psycho. For all its faults, its still a good way to spend 90 minutes on any evening and a film i'm glad to have in my personal collection.

This film though does have 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound and is presented in 2.40:1 Anamorphic Widescreen in both it's Theatrical and Extended Versions (both included on this DVD). Packed with special features, including an two commentaries, deleted scenes and an alternate ending - this DVD has been put together extremely well.

All round i'd actually give this 3.5 out of 5 which seems a more realistic rating than the 5/5 ratings you see for every film you look at. Happy viewing.

  Reveal the truth!

I watched Identity in the cinema, but didn't get to watch it much since I was with my girlfriend **wink wink** But I managed to catch all of the ending that stayed with me for ages afterwards. It made me want to watch the film again not because the twist at the end was complicated to understand but because of how disturbing it was.

I then bought it on DVD. I will say that it isn't the sort of film you can watch over and over again but the first time experience will unexpectedly blow you away. This isn't your typical horror flick, it actually has a compelling story, character development and some unique and shocking twists! The film starts off getting us to know the characters well enough not for us to forget about them and to feel for them. It does take a while before the horrific incidents start happening which all of the characters start questioning who the murderer could be. I will warn you that it does start to get surreal half way through that may make you question if the film has been ruined or not, but stay watching it as all will be revealed at the end with a more sensible twist. But the only way your going to get it is by focusing on the film all the way through, there are key elements throughout the film that you must watch and listen to the dialogue for you to understand completely. It is a brain taxing film and is the sort of film for those prepared to think. There is some silly popcorn moments when it comes to the violence, but then it just shows the aftermath carnage of the murderer's victims. It does give it the more realistic look rather than showing cgi, which only happens in two of the deaths which are more or less just the same as each other, but then I think the filmmakers could of put a bit more blood to even up the tension. It isn't as good the second time around and this film should be bought all depending if it is for a reasonable price. It isn't worth the full retail price. This film is more of a thriller than a horror, lowering the violence and jumps to give us great performances from an all-star cast, great storytelling and a inspirational twist. Watch this little masterpiece.

I really enjoyed this film. There are a couple of quite scary bits, but the plot moves along nicely with some great twists along the way as you gradually work out what is going on.

Not since the late great Alfred Hitchcock has a film quite had me on the edge of my seat waiting for an unexpected, yet satisfying conclusion. Identity (unlike so many in-between) did just what I hoped for and more.

Although Hitchcock was a master of his craft - the films are now looking somewhat dated and many have pretended to offer something akin to the great man himself. Sadly 98% have failed.

Now there are nowhere near as many twists and turns here as Hitchcock could dream up - but those tired, overworked inividuals of modern day society will take satisfaction from a story that is easily followed and yet deliers a "sucker-punch" to the senses when the culprit is finally revealed.

And before you ask - it is always the one you least expect, but no - there is no butler in it.

A good murder/mystery/horror with a gripping twist. I had to watch it twice to make sure I fully understood what had just happened! But was happy to do so. I would highly recommend this film, John Cusack is great and Ray Liotta is a menacing as usual.

  Real twister!
Review created: 23/05/08

With an ace up its sleeve, Identity does for schizophrenia what The Silence of the Lambs did for fava beans and a nice chianti. On the proverbial dark and stormy night, this anxiety-laced thriller offers a tasty blend of And Then There Were None and Psycho, with a dash of Sybil for extra spice and psychosis. Things go from bad to worse when 10 unrelated travelers converge at an isolated motel and proceed to die, one by one, with no apparent connection... until they discover the common detail that's drawn them into this nightmare of relentless trauma. Even as it flunks Abnormal Psychology 101, Michael Cooney's screenplay offers meaty material for a superior ensemble cast including John Cusack and Rebecca DeMornay (who wins the Janet Leigh prize in a bitchy comeback role). Director James Mangold pivots the action around one character (played by his Heavy star, Pruitt Taylor Vince, in eye-twitching cuckoo mode), and half the fun of Identity comes from deciphering who's who, what's what, and who'll be the next to die

A terrible thunder storm with torrential rain, a run-down motel in the middle of nowhere, ten strangers thrown together and unable to leave. All the ingredients for a fantastic thriller with a big twist. You'll never use that hotel laundry room again...
