Superb build quality, good specs, horrible harddisk!..

I always thought Thinkpad X41 Tablet would be my ultimate machine, assuming that it had decent performance. Sadly, I was appalled with its poor performance when I received it. My twice slower Thinkpad X22 (PIII-800MHz) was much quicker than it in many ways. I tried all kinds of tricks, reduced the OS load by uninstalling IBM default software, increased RAM to 1.3GB, etc. Nothing helped, the cursor would freeze when the HDD was searching for files. The main issue is that IBM chose a small 1.8" HDD for this machine, which is very slow and useless (and I can't see much space savings over a proper 2.5" one).
Then I found out that Microsoft released a patch which updates tabtip.exe to correct erratic behavior (KB895953 - Memory Leak in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition). Honestly, it helped a lot. Now my machine is much better, but 1.8" HDD still sucks. I will probably try an SSD once they are cheaper.
PROs:
- Superb build quality, durable, and excellent design
- A complete set of software preloaded to help you with your business
- Trademark IBM Thinkpad keyboard, a pleasure to type
CONs:
- Performance hindered by 1.8" HDD
- Tabtip.exe issue (I can't believe IBM releasing a machine with this fault)
- Original system restore takes over 4hrs.
Overall, fine machine, but get ready to pay extra for an SSD upgrade. Newer tablets from IBM are better I think.
