The Hunt For Red October (DVD 2000)

This is a movie that is based upon a book by Tom Clancy, and it's very well made and exciting. The director John McTiernan has probably made the best action drama with plot from the cold war ever made so far.
The best features of this film is the intensity of the drama, you stay inside the story and forget where you are almost throughout. Sean Connery is doing a tremendous acting job as the captain of the nuclear sub, and a collection of other well-known actors make this a very recommendable movie as well.
Alec Baldwin is playing the expert on warfare and conflict that we are supposed to identify with. He is the link on the western side that the defecting soviet sub-commander has to connect with to save the whole situation from ending in a catasrophe. The role he is playing is maybe a little too much, meaning it's very unrealistic and made for daydreamers, but that's the idea of it all isn't it?
I also think that the action scenes from below the surface are far out regarding any realism: how they manouvre the U-boats as if it's a horse in a westermovie. Remember it's pich black down there!
But that doesn't spoil the intention of the movie: to make an action thriller that catch your attention for over 2 hours. If you are interested in U-boatdramas from the cold war, this is the number one DVD to buy.

I'd already seen this this movie several times, my new partner had not. She just had to see it, and consequently enjoyed it immensely.

Sean Connery is brilliant in this film. The book was exceptional and the film is pretty faithful to it, bettering it in some ways especially with the unnderwater action which in real life the submarines could not really see each other in the normal sense of the word. I won't spoil the plot for you but it is a film that I find very watchable and however many times I see it I still enjoy it. It is of course an action film and not a "girlie" film at all, but the fact there is so little female interaction is good as it lends the film a gravitas. There is also nothing that I could detect as being unreal about it either, and this is confirmed by ex navy friends who say that most if it is very possible. The exception being the "caterpiller" drive which is at the moment beyond known military technology. It really is an entertaining film.

The first film to come out of the best seller author (and now video game producer), The Hunt for the Red October is a thriller set under the seas. I had to watch it in three sittings, not because it was particularly long but because it’s not one for the wife and kids.

There is no real action but the high standard of acting and interesting concept makes it for compelling watching. I haven’t read the book but one can only assume the story is best suited to a book because of the lack of action. That said, it can safely be said that this film is not one of those that should have been kept to paper format and does holds its own as a film. It may largely be down to its cast though. As well as the A-list actors like Connery, the film has actors in their early years of TV/ Film such as a Young Tim Curry (Home alone 2) and Peter Firth (better known has Harry from Spooks).
All in all, an entertaining watch.

I have always found The Hunt for red october a brilliant film.
I never find it slow or boring. My partner did!
The story revolves around a Russian crews attempt to defect, and hand over a top secret new submarine.
Superb.
