Great Freeview box with hard disk recording

I have owned one of these since 2005 and it has not let me down at all. It has an onscreen TV guide that lasts 7 days, and you can select a program to record by pressing OK on the program highlighted. You can also manually enter times and dates for recording programs if you do not see it in the guide.
I found it fairly easy to set up and it is easy to use. It has a good remote control and audio outputs include optical 5.1 surround sound. It also has some simple built in games which are fun to play if bored for a few minutes.
The only downsides are: 1. volume control on remote does not do anything (it might work with the right TV though), 2. cannot export recordings to a PC, 3. the 20 hours space soon fills up.
If you record something on this it is easy to play back and you can also output via SCART to a DVD recorder if you want to keep something longer and free up space on the hard disk.
And one of the best features of this is being able to pause live TV, rewind it, and if "time-shifting" like this, then fast forward through boring bits.
I would recommend one of these to you if you are looking for a great Freeview box. I expect they will be quite cheap now second hand, as they are no longer being made. Mine has lasted very well, and if you find one in good condition it will probably have plenty of life left in it yet.

Better than a Thomsom DTi 6300

We had a Thomsom Dti 6300 TopUpTV 160 gig PVR, although we didn't use the Top Up facility. The Thomson was so unreliable in the sense that you could not depend on it recording. It would be successful, say, 75% of the time. This was really frustrating when you were following a series!! Thank goodness for iPlayer!

Did some reading up about people's experiences and saw this new Humax on eBay. True, it's an older model and it doesn't record more than one program at a time, so bear that in mind if that's important to you. The hard drive is only 80 gig too, but extremely easy to upgrade. I put a 160 gig drive in ours. However, this box is rock solid, does exactly what it should and has been a delight to use. The quality is excellent. Very quiet too - no fan - which is better than the noisy fan types. If you don't mind the minor drawbacks, you'll be well pleased with this.

Humax set the standard for PVR
Review created: 12/11/08

This is one of the 'old style' PVRs in that it is single tuner and 40GB, but there is still a place for an easy to use Freeview recorder which doesn't have the latest of absolutely everything. Humax were early leaders in this field and continue to set the standards.

This was a 70th birthday present for a family member who would still like to record the programmes he's missing and finds the VHS option obsolete, the DVD recorder too complicated and does not want a large backlog of items waiting to be watched. We have had a Humax PVR for a few years now and it has been totally reliable and very user friendly so it seemed the obvious purchase for someone for whom this sort of new technology is not necessarily the easiest to grasp.

A pity that these smaller basic models are harder to find as the TVs with built in hard disks are not yet establishing themselves in the market, and not everyone wants or needs hours and hours of recordings, nor the option to watch several channels at once, nor to replace TVs etc which still work.

We would certainly buy and recommend Humax again.

  HUMAX PVR-800T

Very capable, easy to use FREEVIEW hard drive recorder. Instruction book quite comprehensive, better than most but I am glad I have 50 years in the Electronics business or it may have defeated me!
Bought it on recommendation of a colleague who's wife found it indispensable, with good reason, I am sure mine will agree with her.

  HUMAX PVR 8000T

Ideal for people who are non- technical and reluctant to move away from VCR's.
Very easy to set-up and operate. Had the one with the 80GB Hard Drive for several years before upgrading to a Sony Combi recorder with DVD plus the newer Humax PVR9105T with twin tuner. Now got everything covered.
