Album Notes Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass); John Bonham (drums).Recorded at Los Angeles Forum, Los Angeles, California and Long Beach Area, Long Beach, California on June 25 & 27, 1972.In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening "Immigrant Song," reinventing the blues form on "Heartbreaker," and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on "Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog." This being 1972, the band had made its journey into the folk-rock realm as well, and come out with the touching "Going to California" and "That's the Way," the earthy "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," and the minstrel-in-the-hills fancy of "Over the Hills and Far Away," all of which are given strong voice here. A 25-minute "Dazed and Confused" and epic-length drum solo on the John Bonham feature "Moby Dick" show that Zep was unafraid to venture into anything they damn well pleased, but the bluesy grit and primal hard-rock crunch of their feel throughout this collection reveals the pure visceral magic of which these '70s icons were capable. Reviews As I write this review, I am listening to it now, and it is no let down. this album really just showcases Led Zep at their greatest. this album captures everything they are live. from the heavy intro of Immigrant Song, through stairway, heartbreaker, black dog, the 25min epic dazed and confused, the 20min drum solo of Moby Dick, straight through to the whole lotta love medley. this album goes for a while, so if you plan to listen to it in one go, make sure you have 2 and half hours free. its zeppelin at their peak, why wouldn't you get it. it even shows you their contrast of heavy rock to the acoustics. apart from the song remains the same, this is the only real live album from them. recorded before the song remains the same, anyone who's a fan of that will want this to see how they went from fab studio recordings, to amazing live material. its them at their best and an illustration of How The West Was Won. An incredible band with incredible talent and this cd shows them at the very best!!! Old favourites including 'Black Dog' 'since i've been loving you' 'Rock and Roll' 'Stairway to Heaven' are all here with each member producing sound and preformance of sheer quality. My personal favorite's 'immagrant song'- short but sweet with that great chuggy riff, spine-tingling vocals and heavy drum and bass make this song one of their greatest. 'Whole Lotta Love' 23 minutes long ( not long enough n my opinion) includes the great song itself with a fantastic BLUES MELODY is incredible!!! Overall a great cd!!! 10 out of 10 Review ID: 10000000003393659 Was this review helpful? Report this review This C.D. set shows just why Zep where the biggest and best heavy rock band in the world. The live performances reflect what they where all about and I think it is better than "The Song Remains the Same" live C.D. It covers all aspects of a Zeppelin gig, from the acoustic section through to mamouth versions of songs like Moby Dick. If you ever saw them live this will bring back the memories, whereas if you are new to Led Zep buy it because this 3 c.d set will show HOW THE WEST WAS WON! Report this review The whole CD is great.I have always been a Zepplin fan since the band first got together.I have many of their albums but had not heard of How The West Was Won until I saw it on Ebay.As soon as I saw it I knew I had to get it!I thought it was a decent price for an album of this quality and it has lived up to my expectations.I'm glad I searched for Led Zepplin and I'm even more glad that I bid on this auction!
