Album Notes
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric guitars, electric 12-string guitar, background vocals); John Paul Jones (mellotron, organ, synthesizers, bass, background vocals); John Bonham (drums). Recorded at Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York and Olympic, London, England. All tracks have been digitally remastered.HOUSES OF THE HOLY was the nickname Led Zeppelin concocted for the huge sports arenas they were then playing, because by the time HOUSES OF THE HOLY was released on March 28, 1973, Led Zeppelin was among the biggest touring bands in all of rock. And in producer-composer-guitarist Jimmy Page, they had one of its most gifted arrangers, although compared to their previous two albums, HOUSES OF THE HOLY is more of a bare-bones, back-to-the-roots kind of production. Certainly tunes like "The Rain Song," "Over The Hills And Far Away" and "No Quarter" showcase vocalist Plant's whisper-to-a-scream range, Jones' tasteful use of emerging electronic keyboard technologies, and Page's expressive use of multiple guitar tracks to create an orchestral ambience. But on the whole there is more of an emphasis on the rhythmic interplay between Page, Jones and Bonham, from the James Brown-derived funk of "The Crunge" and the reggaeish dance breaks of "D'yer Mak'er," to the menacing eastern modalities of "Dancing Days" and the rocking raveups of "The Song Remains The Same" and "The Ocean."Recorded during the spring of 1972 at Stargroves (one of Mick Jagger's homes) and through the summer of 1972 at Olympic Studios in London and Electric Lady in New York City.

having just listened to the album, i must say i was a little dissapointed. dont get me wrong, there are some brill tarcks on this album; The Song REmains The Same, The Rain Song, No Quarter, all brillaint songs, but they are let down byt the awfullness of The Crunge, hands down the worst song ive ver heard from Zeppelin. if no quarter were in its place on side 1, then side 1 would have been perfect. The Ocean is a nice little song too, but the reggae D'Yer M'ker and the opening to side 2 Dancing Days, are a little weak. not to mention the would be title track, houses of the holy was left off because it apparently didnt fit. call the album something else then, houses is a fantastic song, which would have made it better, but they left it off and i am really dissapointed. buy the album for your collection, buy it coz its a zeppelin album, but i wouldnt recommend it for someone who is new to zeppelin and looking for a way in. for that you need zeppelin IV then start from the start. overall i gave it 3 stars coz its an ok album, i would have given it two if it wernt for the few good songs. i just feel after IV, its a bit of a let down, they were getting better and better till houses came along, but after it they still managed to be great. Graffiti is ace and so is Presence, but this is the weak album out of all of them.

Houses of The Holy still kicking after 35 years

This album is full of instinctive and experimental guitar/instrumental riffs. A real inspiration for those seeking musical creativity for song writing. Dancing days and Song Remains the Same (with No Quarter a Hobbits nightmare) my favourites.

It was always going to be a problem following their 4th album, but by and large they manage it.
While not being as complete an album as Led Zep 4;It still delivers and contains some absolute classic Zep tracks that compare well with their catalogue.
"The song remains the same" and "The rain song" do it big time for me.
Younger rock fans, perhaps wondering what Led Zep were all about will enhance their CD collection with this album, while anyone over the age of 40 will either have this already or at least have heard it.
Overall a better than average album and a absolute gem of 70`s British rock.
