  House on Haunted Hill

I love the opening of this film, in which you think you know exactly what's going to happen next and then you're wrong, at least 3 times! The plot is a twist on the old 'spend a night in a supposedly haunted place for a dare' convention, with some decidedly graphic distractions from the other nastiness going on, particularly in the relationship between the two main characters. If you've enjoyed films like 'Saw' and 'Hostel' then this won't be gratuitously nasty enough for you, but if you're a fan of horror films that look good, and are intelligent enough to stop your IQ plunging ever downwards, then you could do worse than devote an hour and a half to 'House on Haunted Hill'. It really didn't need a sequel though...

House on Haunted Hill Remake 1999

Being bored senseless by most horror remakes (House on Haunted Hill is a remake of the 1953 film of the same name starring Vincent Price) this film is a refreshing change, it has exactly what a horror film should have: Blood, a creepy loud soundtrack and more than a few twists.

As soon as the film starts the disturbing opening sequence lets you know that this horror flick will not be pulling any punches.

So we have our House - an abandoned 1930's mental asylum for the criminal insane - inhabited by ghosts of the inmates and staff, burnt to death in the building.

Enter Stephen and Evelyn Price. A super rich couple with a hate-hate relationship. Stephen is the consummate showman in the style of Barnum, only his specialty is terror. His theme parks are notorious for scaring the granny out of people.

Evelyn (played by the stunning Famke Janssen) sees a ghost documentary on "The House", and decides to have her birthday party there. She tells her husband to set it up, and of course Stephen sees the opportunity for a fright night, offering the guests the chance to win $1,000,000 if they survive the night.

Only he shreds her guest list and write his own, which is then altered by an mysterious force, and this is where the predictable horror plot comes in. Descendants of the original hospital staff are invited instead to the House to become the latest victims. This is where the roller coaster of twists come into play as the Prices start to fight, with the house and ghosts serving as a foil between them. There are a few surprises, although the ending becomes more predictable once you figure out who's amongst the guests. Other horror cliches do appear, such as the tripping characters, or the character that just stands there as the monstrous ghoul advances on them, but they are not as prominent as in some films. You can see the ending mile away but it still works.

The special and audio effects are crude but are great in giving you the sensation that sinister whispers, scratches and eerie noises are happening behind you.

ll in all a very underrated film, I found it to be well acted, creepily atmospheric, and above all scary. If you liked Thirteen Ghosts you'll enjoy this.
