Last time we saw Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, we left them to their own devices in a shed playing games with each other. Now the duo have returned entering a completely different field of danger, instead of taking a cricket bat to the undead, they’re facing chav's, villains and an illusive swan in, Hot Fuzz.
Pegg plays Nicholas Angel, an up and coming copper who’s making everyone else look bad. With the rest of the station tired of Angel being so good, they find an answer to their problems in the sleepy town of Sandford, and shipping Angel out to the timid and tranquil area. Angel’s fast chases on the streets of London are far behind him as all he can look forward to now is kicking out the underage drinkers at the local pub and drawing out the winners of the raffle at the village fete; not quite the usual for our hero, especially when he’s got PC plonker, Danny Butterman (Frost) constantly hounding him about police life in the big city. But little does the duo know that they’re about run into some serious dastardly deeds in merry old Sandford.
It isn’t long after Angel is reluctantly settling in that people are being knocked off left right and centre, and it seems our plucky and proper policeman is the only one who can see it. Suspects are everywhere and with the death toll growing, Angel must find the dark secret that is hidden in sunny village-fast. But with the only bit of help coming from new partner Butterman can he uncover the truth, save the day, and find that bloody swan?
Liked Shaun taking down zombies? Then you’ll love this as I say this in all honesty-it was fuzzin’ brilliant!
The eager anticipation for the return of the lads that bought us the first romzomcom has finally paid off. Every goal that was reached in Shaun of the Dead parallels that of Hot Fuz. Not only have the minds of Wright and Pegg bought us a crackin’ comedy, they’ve handed us a awesome action film.
Hot Fuzz has managed to neatly tick all the boxes that make the likes of Lethal Weapon, Die Hard and even 007 so popular; the buddy element, the hefty explosions and thrill ride of a gunfight finale that takes place in the middle of the frozen foods isle; Somerfield’s reputation is going to shoot through the roof, thanks to this.
And ignore all those that may see this as better or worse then SOTD; as you simply can’t compare it, this is an ace action film- one which they’ve got down to an art. Sure they’ve given a wink to their previous hit, but it’s handed carefully so as not to be using just the same material. Frost characters guzzling down Cornetto’s and Pegg has finally managed to crack the whole fence hopping game, but you’ll be too busy to notice at times thanks to crème de la crème of British comedy showing their badge, and a genuinely intriguing story line. Bill Bailey’s the miserable troll that we all know and love as well as Steve Coogan and Martin Freeman nipping in for a hello, all adding to what is probably the very first UK action film, and a damn good one at that.
Undoubtedly the SOTD lads have cranked out another sure hit mainly down to the Pegg/Frost partnership we loved in their first big screen outing. Car chases, gun fights and a granny g
