Album Notes
Often compared to countrymen Coldplay and Radiohead, the UK-based trio Keane plays a similarly majestic, sweeping blend of pop-informed rock music. Fueling the comparisons is the fact that lead vocalist Tom Chaplin makes heavy use of the same kind of Jeff Buckley-esque falsetto and emotion-filled wails favored by Chris Martin and Thom Yorke. On HOPES AND FEARS's epic tracks such as "She Has No Time," however, Keane takes the more dramatic elements of the aforementioned bands' sounds and magnifies them, creating piano- and synthesizer-driven cinematic soundscapes dripping with quiet heartache and existential angst. In addition, Keane incorporates minimalist trip-hop beats, which, in combination with Chaplin's strong pop melodies, evoke a male-led Portishead jamming with the Raspberries. One of the most sonically atmospheric groups of the Britpop scene, Keane ignores the notion of traditional guitar-based rock music in favor of something altogether quieter, yet equally as intense.

Editorial Reviews
Keane's exceedingly pretty piano-based debut cruises fairly close to Coldplay attitude.Mojo (p.116) - 3 stars out of 5 - [T]here's plenty to keep the eyes welling up for a good 45 minutes...

Good Points
Wonderful music!! Meaningful lyrics, and beautiful music come together to make every song in this a favourite of mine.

Bad Points
The songs are all very similar in style and have a lot of the same chord progressions and such. But if you love what they have, then you'll love every song! So for me, it's a benefit, for someone not so fond of Keane... well you might hate most of it then.

General Comments
Keane is not the new Coldplay. I think Keane is better than Coldplay! I love the music on Hopes & Fears, the piano, the mood of the songs, and the lyrics. They're intelligent and thought-provoking, and then the music is just glorious. Moody at times, uplifting at others, it's always emotional and beautiful.

This CD has to be the best album released in the last decade, I bought this copy Hopes and Fears to play in the car and what can I say, from start to finish its catches and hooks draw you in, and leaves you with a pleasant taste in your mouth. It features the top ten hits Everybody’s changing, Bedshaped; This is the last time and the epic Somewhere only we know. A brief look at the band Keane aren’t an over night success, they have been together since 1997 and hooked up at school in their home town near Battle in East Sussex. Keane are Tim Rice Oxley on Piano, Tom Chaplin on Vocals and Richard Hughes on Drums. This CD is a must for music lovers everywhere, and not a guitar in sight, an overall summery is – a breath of fresh air

I saw them in a live concert on the TV a couple of years ago and they were fantastic, so had to get this album and it doesn't disappoint. A great album of piano rock, not a bad track, so the fact that many sound the same isn't really a bad thing !

I don't know why I bought this album. But it hasn't stirred anything inside me, and it isn't really recomended for anyone who likes good music. Perhaps buy it for you mum or for a funeral parlour or something??? As is easy listening, non offensive and increadibly boring!
