  Perfect chick-flick

Feel good chick-flick, based around a house swap between two women who have both reached a crisis in their love lives. Predictable plot, you know what to expect from this genre, but still it carries you all the way to the end and could make even the coldest heart a little warmer.

Two thirty-somethings who are trying to survive wrecked romances get away from it all by doing a house swap for a fortnight. The English girl goes to a mansion in LA, the American girl to an English cottage. Surprise, surprise they both find romance. The excellent Kate Winslet and Jack Black, it must be said, make a very unlikely item. Cameron Diaz - who you can see enjoyed this role - has a more convincing romance with Jude Law. An entertaining piece of romantic froth which would be great with a couple of bottles of wine on a girls' night in.

  The Holiday: Review
Review created: 03/07/07(updated 03/07/07)

As a pleasant dose of holiday cheer, The Holiday is a lovable love story with all the Christmas trimmings. In the capable hands of writer-director Nancy Meyers (making her first romantic comedy since Something's Gotta Give), it all begins when two successful yet unhappy women connect through a home-swapping website, and decide to trade houses for the Christmas holiday in a mutual effort to forget their man troubles.

Iris (Kate Winslet) is a London-based journalist who lives in a picture-postcard cottage in Surrey, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) owns a movie-trailer production company (leading her to cutely imagine most of her life as a "coming attraction") and lives in a posh mansion in Beverly Hills.

Iris is heartbroken from unrequited love with a cad of a colleague (Rufus Sewell), and Amanda has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend (Edward Burns), so their home-swapping offers mutual downtime to reassess their love lives.

This being a Nancy Meyers movie (where everything is fabulously decorated and romantic wish-fulfillment is virtually guaranteed), Amanda hooks up with Iris's charming brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris is unexpectedly smitten with Miles (Jack Black), a super-nice film composer on the downside of a failing relationship.

Excellent film!!!

  Lovely film!

As alsmost everyone (those that arent trying to make a point or sell something!!) agrees, this is a wonderful feel good film!

It is perfect to cheer the grey days of winter, especially if suffering with a cold or flu etc.

Even guys will like it, although it may be called a chick flick!

It has more twist and turns than you average rom-com, and having the two story lines adds to the depth of the film!

Life, and films, are about feeling good, so watch this one - it wont let you down!

The Holiday - Lovely 'feel good' movie!

A friend lent me a copy of this film. I've just watched it and loved it so much I had to buy it!

Lovely film - all the performances are really good. Jack Black isn't one of my favourite actors, but he's OK in this. It looks lovely too - really pretty photography of the English countryside.

I found myself smiling all the way through. Snuggle up and enjoy!

I REALLY ENJOYED THIS FILM.
JUDE LAW AND CAMERON DIAZ WERE TERRIFIC AS A ROMANTIC COUPLE.
KATE WINSLET GIVES HER USUAL POLISHED PERFORMANCE ALTHOUGH JACK BLACK IS NOT MY FAVOURITE ACTOR AND I FOUND HIM A LET DOWN.
A REALLY FEEL GOOD MOVIE AND ONE TO LIFT THE SPIRITS ON A COLD WET DAY.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

  Utter Rubbish
Review created: 05/01/09(updated 05/01/09)

Why in films do all brits live in little villages, in a massive country house or small cottages, of course it's snowing too and we all drive minis.

This film was highly irritating from the start. Jude Law and Cameron Diaz are terrible actors (Diazs fake running at the end annoyed me so much). The other couple were as always on top form but it was the story that let them down.

This film ends how you know it will, with a happy ending. If you like soppy much you'll probably like this but it's not for me!

This film is brilliant. One to watch! For the romantics. This is one of my favorite films of all time. I cannot stop watching it. It's a really good story line, draws you in. I would recommend this film to people who like a bit of a love story of course with lots of humour from all stars.

You will most probably go through every emotion imaginable when you see it.

"LAUGHS SCATTERED FEW AND FAR BETWEEN"

Overindulgence is part and parcel of the festive season, but writer/director Nancy Meyers takes this to such an extreme she should be required to supply antacids with every ticket to The Holiday. She certainly didn't hold back when it came to casting. And yet, despite the combined charms of Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Jack Black, this romantic comedy ends up feeling soggy, syrupy and so bloating it'll put you to sleep before the pudding's done.

Both smarting from the pain of broken relationships, LA marketing guru Amanda (Diaz) and Surrey-based journalist Iris (Winslet) embark on a house swap for the holidays. Lethargy sets in early as this decision is preceded by deadly scenes of 'surfing the net' and typing messages to confirm the travel arrangements. Finally, they complete the transaction, only for Meyers to put the brakes on again, revelling in cutesy scenes of Amanda buying biscuits and dancing around the living room in her pyjamas. Meanwhile Iris catches up on some lost sleep...

"LAUGHS SCATTERED FEW AND FAR BETWEEN"

When their prospective beaus eventually turn up, it's only a minor injection of excitement. A usually uninhibited Jack Black appears straitjacketed opposite Winslet, and they never get over that initial awkwardness. In fact, Iris's budding friendship with a legendary screenwriter (Eli Wallach) makes more impact. The dynamic between Diaz and Jude Law is more engaging, but it progresses clumsily (ironically, it seems, because of ill-judged cuts). Overall, the journey feels protracted, with laughs scattered very few and far between. This Christmas, you're better off staying home in front of the telly.
