When I heard they were making a full length film of the Douglas Adams classic I was very dubious. I appreciated the TV series and bought that on VHS and am a huge fan of the books so I approached this DVD with extreme caution. This was not necessary! The film is an absolute delight. The special effects are amazing and the acting (especially Martin Freemans')cannot be faulted. It is a must own and should become a classic. It is lovely to see a blockbuster British Film with British Actors that does not come across as an apology to the American Cinema efforts! This is not a whimsical low budget surprise hit - it is a full on movie spectacular that should be owned so you can watch it with all your mates . . . lots!!

  Stick with Douglas Adams Books
Review created: 22/12/05

I read the complete trilogy of 4 books(now 5) of the hitch hikers series as a teenager and was then introduced to the VHS recording of the series (aired in the early 80's)soon after reading the books, and was pleasantly surprised to find the characters very similar to the ones I had pictured. So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about the new version. I was dissapointed by the lack of characterisation from Arthur and Ford, and even Zaphod broke my heart. Marvin is the only one I found to be almost true to Adam's imagination.
Stick with the books and draw your own conclusions.

i bought this movie as its one of the things that remind me of being a kid. sometimes the remakes are a little dodgy but this is in my opinion better than the first time round and martin freeman brings something special to the movie.

for all you origional series watchers you would not have failed to notice the practically origional script from the early eighties mini series on BBC2,,this is one sci fi film that near enuf sticks to the origional format of the series which for me doesnt happen all that often...loved seeing the origional marvin the paranoid android and the guy that origionally played arther dent in the hologram for the planet defences..even had john malchovich in this one...well worth buying...a true classic,if they ever bring a sequel out for this it wont be worthy of seeing ,,cos how can you top perfection ?

  A hitchhiker's guide to a poor film

To those who have watched the original series or who have read the books, you are in for a huge dissapointment. Even if you have never seen or read the originals, this film is unlikely to entertain you. The only good thing about it was the depressed robot.

The film has good points and bad points,to those of us brought up on the original series,it is quite a poor update, with the characters of Arthur and Ford being very non descript and wooden,Though Alan Rickman as Marvin was very well cast, along with a striking guest role by John Malkovich as a half man half robot, too much time spent on special effects and not enough on the accuracy of the original story,a couple of high points are the appearance of the "original" Arthur as an automated security system, and the "original" Depressed robot Marvin in a crowd scene, overall though ,I wouldnt bother watching it.

If you were not a HGG fan, then you will find this film very odd but possible enjoyable.
As a fan of both radio and TV series this is a pale rendition of the humor and wit.
On the good side is 'how do you make a film(in 2Hrs)of the series' is the dolphins and Slarty's work yard!!
At least it was inexpensive on eBay

Funny if you are clever enough

If you are a bit dim then you probably wont 'get' this movie. If you do have a brain in your head though, give it a try, its refreshing to see an intelligent comedy. Also, if you have a penchant for the random just watch it and enjoy.
Full of clever observational humor about the human race amongst other things.

Brilliant film. funny all the way through.

i love the part where if you think of something you get hit in the face with a spade. i watched that scene over and over.

i love that robot too lol. laughed over and over.

Martin Freeman stars as Arthur Dent is suddenly thrust into intergalactic intrigue when the earth is destroyed by the Vogons. Arthur travels the skyways with his good friend Ford Prefect.

recommend to anyone who is looking for a comedy film

I liked the story the first time I saw it. You have to watch it again and again so as not to miss anything. the price was unbeliveable so to add this to my sci fi collection was a must.

  A great adventure awaits you.

As I said from the title, a great adventure awaits you. A great film made in 2005 that puchses its limit to your imagination. A sequal should have been made by now.

The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy - DVD Film
Review created: 21/10/08

I wanted to see if the film lived up to the book and the BBC series, unfortunately it didnt. Its not a story you can tell in a short period of time, not if your going to get all the jokes and one liners in. Marvin the Parnoid Android was a big disappointment. The original robot from the BBC series makes a cameo appearance and the makers of the film would have been better off using him rather than re-inventing the wheel. That said Alan Rickman was excellent as the voice of Marvin. All in all a bit average but was to be expected when you consider the BBC told the story over a number of episode which in length far exceeded that of the film. My recommendation would be stick to the book, its far better and the story told in way only Douglas Adams could tell it.

42? What kind of an answer is that?

The Hitch Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy. Well where do you start? Fans of the radio series if they're honest are probably sick of Arthur's house being demolished again [ the radio series, the book, the album, the tv series and the video game ] so we FINALLY have the film. Sad to say that if Douglas Adams was still alive the movie wouldn't have been made and I wouldn't be typing this review. As it is we have a very good interpretation of the original story with some bits that probably infuriate the purist but entertain the masses. It's well worth having but I seriously hope that Hollywood will see past the first part that has become very jaded with reproduction and go on to produce the rest of Douglas's work which all H2G2 fans are still waiting for. Darcsyde.

  Thumbs up for H2G2!

Every time that Douglas Adams moved the story of Hitchhikers to a new media, he altered the story a little. This was no exception and, although he never saw the final product, he was on to another winner. Martin Freeman makes an excellent Arthur, and all the cameo appearances and homage moments (completed by Douglas Adams' appearance at the end) make this a must see.

  Terrible! Terrible!
Review created: 07/05/08

Nothing like the books. Awful - would rather eat my own toenails than watch it again - a shameful hijacking of the franchise that equally leaves the uninitiated bemused at the lack of plot and any sympathetic character while anyone familiar with the series from wireless or book just plain angry. Special effects are good though and I suppose Bill Nighy is good as Slartibartfast. Should only cost a couple of quids on e-bay - avoid it even so!

  A good effort
Review created: 12/03/08

Now it was never going to be as good as the radio series or the books or even the old BBC sTV series but I think they made a good job considering. I have been a fan of Douglas Adams for many years but managed to watch it with an open mind and really enjoyed it. Lots of hidden bits for the die hard fans and some original moments too which would do Douglas Adams proud.

Not perfect but a good effort.

If anything this was better the effects were great as you would expect from a film. I would recommend you to see this if you like this sort of film
