  LA Takedown on the Boil!!!!!!

If you've seen HEAT before you've seen L.A. TAKEDOWN ... well then, you'll have to forgive the hoary old cliché "it suffers in comparison." For the latter was in fact Michael Mann's made-for-TV 'original' - like his 1986 MANHUNTER, an adaptation of Thomas Harris' best-selling psycho-thriller Red Dragon, the second version 'remake' (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) is known as the better product.
Which is a pity, really, as both originals were slickly-made and engrossing thrillers, with cold professionals both coolly and coldly pursuing that which neither know anything else but ... Robert DeNiro grimmaces as per, and Al Pacino simply plays Al Pacino. In what is possibly the most electrifying two minutes of 1990s cinema, Pacino invites DeNiro for a 'cup of cawfey' and a quiet chat. In both film versions, both characters admit, with sardonic understatement, how their respective lives are empty and hollow: the bankrobber's is limited to any relationship from which he can walk away in 30 seconds flat, and the policeman's dedication to his career is threatening the loss of the woman he loves. Each man concedes a brief empathy for the other's mirrored emptiness - it makes the closing hand-clasping scene almost touching ...

There are entire takes and scenes where the dialogue is word-perfect. Only Patrick McLaren (LA TAKEDOWN) becomes Neil McCauley (HEAT) - but they still sell swimming-pools - and the Waynegro character boasts added tattoos and sleaze in HEAT. And Hey! whaddya know: Wes Studi (DANCES WITH WOLVES, LAST OF THE MOHICANS, GERONIMO) actually plays a Good Guy for a change! Both films are, of course, ridden with the tough-guy aphorisms one can nowadays expect from an action thriller (and complain into half-empty pint glasses when they're absent from the anticipated excitement) - "We're sitting here drinkin' cawfey, but if I see you coming out of a score, you're going down" ...

Having said that, HEAT - despite its 163 minutes running time ... is riveting. The dialogue is tight. The downtown gun-battle (filmed in downtown Los Angeles) sounds alarmingly genuine, as the staccato of automatic gunfire reverberates both loudly and impressively between the skyscrapers - full marks to the Sound Effects boffins! If you're stereo-ed up to your amp, crank up the Wattage for an ear-shattering and neighbour-rousing experience!

A must see "cop vs crook" drama
Review created: 07/09/06

Been a huge fan of De niro and Pacino i had to buy this film just to see them share the same screen, which when they do its not the usual brutality we are used to but its still none the less an acting masterclass.
Pacino plays Vincent Hanna a stop at nothing to catch his prey cop,too obsessed with his work to have much of a mariage.
De Niro plays Neil McCauley,a crook who doesn't mind a little violence now and then,to obsessed with his work to have much of a life
In the early scenes of this nearly three hour movie you witness the methodical hijacking of an armoured van, showcasing McCauley's master-thief brain, who is also unsentimental, disaplined and violent when needs be.
Mann(pacino) paints the portrait of manic, impatient, jaded and efficient who also hangs out with criminals, these two lead interchangable lives. The big bank robbery is one of the highlights of the film with one of the best shootouts you'll see,val kilmer does well as the support actor,(althogh the pony tail didnt need to be there)
Thisgets a 4/5 from me and the price of it on Ebay nowadays makes it a must for your Dvd collection

You would have to be a complete dumb ass if you thought that this movie was anything but an absolute masterpiece. Without shaddow of a doubt my most favorite film ever. The shoot out scene is in my guessing as realistic as can be without actully doing the whole thing for real. I guess I cannot do a review like those before me but all I can say this DVD is well worth whatever you pay. I am looking to buy myself as a collectors item.

Happy bidding

A superb movie, with two of Holywood's greats pitted against each other. Edge of the seat stuff. A simple storyline with a few twist and turns and action. A gripping film.

One of the Best Shoot-Outs in Movie History
Review created: 24/08/06
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

firstly lets not forget that this is an ace film. it's long, but does not feel long. there are some fantastic performances, not just from deniro and pacino.. but also from supporting heavyweights like kilmer, who shares (with ashley judd) perhaps the most moving scene in the entire movie

okay now lets get to the shoot-out scene!.. real adrenaline filled genius. make a special note of the sound, the gun shots are amazing and are mixed up from tight in-car mayhem to the wonderful airy outside shots which echo off the city sky-scrapers. absolutely brill. the movie is worth watching for this scene alone, and you'd be hard pushed to find a better shoot-out scene anywhere
if you like your action, but also enjoy suspense/romance, well rounded and acted characters, brill music and sound etc. watch this!

A classic film with an array of famous and well known actor's. Action packed especially the bank robbery scene and the actors in that scene looked so professional in the way they handled the fire - arm's in the chase and made it so realistic and mid blowing!!

It was a real treat the way the director bought in the women of theses modern day Robyn Hood's into the movie and show that they can carea and have committment's that they honour in life. The mutual respect between Robber and Cop was captured and told effortlessly and gave a true picture of the way everyone thinks in these situation's of life.

I want to end this by saying that I did not end my search until I had this movie in my collection and it put on the highest part of my DVD Rack.

Heat is a superb film.
It keeps me engrossed from beginning to end.
Robert De Niro is a professional Bank Robber. Al Pacino the cop chasing him.
The shoot out in the street when one robbery goes wrong is absolutely awesome.
Excellent action movie.

Long time favourite of mine personally.
Review created: 05/06/08

"Never have anything in your life you can't walk out on in thirty seconds" is the motto of expert thief Neil McCauley (De Niro). After his next break-in, McCauley plans to retire from his outlaw life and move to New Zealand. However, Vincent Hanna (Pacino), a Los Angeles police detective, obsessively tracks McCauley's gang of thieves, who have left three security guards dead in an armored truck robbery. As the detective gets closer to tracking them down, the crooks plan another big heist, this time at a bank. Hanna soon gets a lead that helps him determine the identity of the criminal mastermind who engineered the thefts, and discovers McCauley is a man as driven and relentless as the detective himself.

Who can begrudge the on screen prescence and brilliance of these fine actors, De Niro & Pacino.

  Must-see film classic
Review created: 05/02/08

Having converted most of my old video collection to DVD I was thrilled to find this film gem in digital format. If you watch this in widescreen format, it really does the shootout scene great justice; coupled with surround sound, you'll be gripped by the amazing cinematography. I would recommend the director's at scene 32 (1hr 38) cut that includes scenes where the cops their come-upance.

  DeNiro vs Pacino
Review created: 26/01/08

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are finally together on screen in this riveting story about an intense rivalry between expert thief Neil McCauley (De Niro) and volatile cop Vincent Hanna (Pacino). McCauley will stop at nothing to do what he does best and neither will Hanna, even though it means destroying everything around them, including the people they love. With a solid supporting cast that includes Val Kilmer, Jon Voight, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman, HEAT is a truly epic crime story.

Directed by Michael Mann, this crime thriller about a cop (Al Pacino) and a robber (Robert De Niro) is epic in both scale and length, clocking in at just under three hours. Though punctuated by bursts of virtuoso action, including a running battle in downtown LA that ranks as one of the best action scenes ever filmed, it is the unusual emphasis on character that impresses most. De Niro is in fine form as the calm, methodical loner whose life is arranged so that he can abandon everything in 30 seconds when the heat is on, including his sidekick, Val Kilmer. Pacino, by contrast, is more of a clich?, angst-ridden and on his third marriage. We've seen it before and catch Pacino acting all the time, especially in his set-piece meeting with De Niro. It's also a pity that after so much brilliance Mann should succumb to a derivative ending — an airport chase, à la The Killing and Bullitt, and a tidy if bloody resolution in which the wrong man gets killed.

Review created: 01/01/08

this is a classic michael mann film you just have to play kane and lynch and this film is the premise for that game
so why the hell are they making a film of the game
michael mann's already done it in heat and collateral

the only way that game to film adapation would be any good is if mann did it and thats not his style

I absolutely love this one. AL Pacino has some great lines and delivers them with gusto. De Niro is superbly moody as always.

As every other reviewer will tell you, the final heist with action shot in downtown LA is immense. If you've just installed a surround sound system, you need to test it with this baby.

Stylish crime film that lives up to the five star cast
Review created: 09/05/07

I bought this because i'm a big fan of both Pacino and De Niro. I was not dissapointed - this is worth buying for the quality the action scenes alone. Fortunately these epic moments are held together with a great story and some excellent performances, as you would expect given the quality of the cast.

Highly Recommended!
