This is the best ghost movie of all time, I first saw it when i was merely a kid. It scared me then and it scares me now. I love this movie becouse it doesnt rely on special effects, gore or anything particulary visual, but it uses atmosphere and phycological means to scare you. and it works.
1963 the film was made and it remains of the scariest movies of all time. with all the other ghost stories to hit the big screen this still remains the mother of all.
Julie Harris plays Eleanor Vance, who gradually becomes more and more hipnotised and intoxicated by the house until her ultimate demise.
The film did have one scene with a visual effect. the scene in the lounge where the door begins to worp and change shape as though it was breathing is one of the scariest scenes.
This movie is so much more intense and scaryier that the remake. Which i have also reviewed. The storyline is the best, with a group of sensitive's coming to stay at Hill House Its truly a classic ghost story.

Great paranormal drama

The Haunting is a very good phsychological paranormal drama,i actually felt really cold when i was watching it the other night,the film was shot in black and white to give it added atmosphere,{and it works}
The Haunting takes place in a 90 year old mansion called Hill House,and it was evil from the beginning as a series of strange and untimely deaths happened there.Four people one a non believer go to the house to study its supernatural occurances.Has one of them been deliberatly drawn there?Does the house want to claim another victim?you will have to wait and see.
The actors Julie Harris,Claire Bloom,Richard Johnson and Russ Tamblyn all turn in good performances and convince us that the house is evil.
Also on the disc is some interesting commentry from the four actors and the director of the film Robert Wise.It was interesting to know that the mansion was real and is just outside Stratford on Avon,this for me makes the film all that more authentic and as i already said i felt really chilled while i was watching it.If you like films about the paranormal then this is a must see.

Old film, atmospheric, filmed in early 1960's in black and white - on par with Hitchcock's "Psycho" - always good to watch!

THIS FILM SCARED ME AS A CHILD AND IT HAD THE SAME EFFECT THIS TIME ROUND. MUCH BETTER THAN THE REMAKE. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO LOVES A GOOD GHOST STORIE. A GREAT CLASSIC SPOOKY FILM THAT DOESN'T NEED BLOOD OR GHORE TO SCARE YOU.
