Album Notes
Original score composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard.GLADIATOR was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. The combination of the prolific Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard is an ingenious one. He's set lush musical backgrounds to everything from comedies (I'LL DO ANYTHING), to period pieces (DRIVING MISS DAISY), to blockbuster war flicks (THE THIN RED LINE); she's one of the duo comprising Dead Can Dance, perhaps the most singular popularizers of ancient music of the '80s and '90s. Zimmer and Gerrard contribute a thrilling, boisterous score. These stirring, magnificent pieces are vital to such epics as GLADIATOR, which depend on them to rouse audiences into fits of passion, to suck them into the action, to involve them in every bloody battle, to bask in the hero's triumphs, to gasp at his possible defeat. The music in GLADIATOR expertly evokes an ancient time with a mixture of majestic, classical themes, and folk music of the ages. Fans of the movie will revel in reliving the grandeur of this powerful cinematic production.

Is Gladiator a great score? Heck, yes. Is Gladiator a great Hans Zimmer score? I don't know.
I have some problems with Hans Zimmer. His music is always closely connected with the atmosphere of the film (that is his task as a film composer, and he succeeds), but his music has to be well orchestrated to catch the ambience of the movie. Many of Zimmer's orchestrations are done by other people (friends and co-workers at Media Ventures) who do very good work. Alas, it is not Zimmer's work, and I always find myself wondering which part of a Zimmer score is Zimmer's work and which is not.

This said, I really LOVE this music. It is exiting as well as emotional. The action cues ("The Battle," "Barbarian Horde") are fully overblown and I LIKE that kind of bombast. Its thrilling performance gives this soudtrack a perfect listening experience.

The vocals by the wonderfully talented Lisa Gerrard give a shining, elegant grace to this album. Gerrard's emotional approach combined with Zimmer's bombast is a masterstroke. It's obvious that Zimmer does NOT deserve all credit. Without Gerrard's contribution, this would't be such a good score.

Sometimes I wonder how this music would sound live (as I do with every score I love). In Gladiator's case, I had the pleasure to actually hear the music live in Ghent, performed by its creators. Let me tell you something, it was AWESOME!!! Lisa Gerrard (and others like John Powell) were peforming as well. A splended evening.

  Gladiator - An inspiring masterpiece!!

Gladiator the film has one of the best soundtracks ever. The music adds so much to the pictures on screen. A simple screen shot of a forrest becomes so much more atmospheric when the soundtrack is added.
This DECCA RECORDS cd released in 2000 has 17 tracks produced by Hans Zimmer. A total running time of 61 minutes.
Hans zimmer is a prolific producer / composer of film soundtrack music. He has worked on films such as;

The Lion King
Black Hawk Down
Pearl Harbour
Hannibal
The Last Samurai
Castaway + many more...........

This, in my opinion, is his best work to date.

The music linked all scenes in the film seamlessly and covered every emotion. Parts of the film were led by this music score.
The last track, 'Now we are free,' became the anthem of the film This track was co-written and sung by Lisa Gerrard. She also wrote track two on the cd that accompanied the 'hand through the wheat' scene.

FANTASTIC

You may also be interested to know that DECCA
have released a second cd ( 2001 ) of music that was not included in the film score but is just as good. On this cd is one of the last pieces of film dialog from the actor Oliver Reed who died while filming the Gladiator.
