Hannibal Rising

Hannibals idyllic childhood is shattered with the onset of WWII and the slaughtering of his family by Russian mercenaries and the German army in picturesque Lithuania. His torment is further compounded when he and his sister are taken captive, thus leading to his plot for revenge in his youth. The film gives a good account of his spiral towards madness and the reason for it but casting of the leads could have been better, particularly that of Rhys Ifans, who makes a pretty unconvincing Grutas. Altogether a good movie which interprets the book well, with the usual thirst for blood and gore, just a shame that Grutas doesn't come across quite as twisted, unscrupulous and monstrous as the book portrays him.
