Includes liner notes by Junji Takahashi. The great pianist, brother to jazz legends Thad and Elvin, essays some stunning performances in both trio and big band settings on this collection of standards. Recorded live in Japan in 1996, Jones' trio, with bassist George Mraz and drummer Dennis Mackrel, swings tastefully on great old tunes like "Love For Sale" and "Speak Low." Each member is given ample room to weave some well-executed melodic improvisations. Mackrel in particular turns in some wonderfully entertaining choruses on most every tune. The leader, as always, displays his seemingly effortless technique and swings sweetly on each piece. For the second half of the performance the trio is joined by the Winds Jazz Orchestra of the Osaka College of Music for some classic big band workouts. Terrific arrangements of the staples "On Green Dolphin Street," "How High The Moon," and brother Thad's "A Child Is Born" make for some great listening. Any fan of Stan Kenton or the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Band will have a good time. A swinging version of Wayne Shorter's "Armageddon" closes the show with some modal fireworks.
Editorial Reviews 3 stars (out of 5) - Hank Jones is...deft, smooth and cultivated throughout this live performance... Down Beat (05/01/1998)
