Review

There are heroes... There are superheroes... And then there's... Hancock.

Will Smith stars as Hancock - a edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood guy whose well-intentioned heroics, might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake. The public has finally had enough - as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn't the kind of man who cares what other people think - until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all.

BETTER THAN EXPECTED! - In fair honesty, I thought in the trailer it was good, as all trailers only show good parts, obviously you don't advertise the CON of the film, anyways, when I watched this I was surprised at the end, few twists in the movie too, but it's respectively quite funny, few laughs and I enjoyed it. Great film and would highly recommend it. 5 star. Amazing ;0)

If you can remember the seismic upheaval in the superhero order that was ‘Superman III’, during which the square-jawed one grew stubble, hit the whisky bottle and flicked peanuts at barmen, you may get flashbacks when watching Will Smith’s Hancock. But the big difference between Christopher Reeve’s trad hero and this latest lazy, drunken member of the caped fraternity is that Hancock was never a Samaritan in the first place. He looks like a tramp, he kips on benches, and he leaves behind him a trail of destruction wherever he tries to lend a hand. He doesn’t even
own a cape.

He’s a selfish layabout in need of some old-fashioned movie redemption. Which is exactly what we get. Oddly, it takes a suburban PR executive called Ray – played with charm by Jason Bateman – to correct Hancock’s behaviour, even if Ray’s wife Mary (Charlize Theron) is strangely wary of their friendship. As Ray gets to work on Hancock’s image, the film offers some humour and Smith, as ever, is fairly charismatic.

For the first half, there’s a laidback, knowing vibe to the script and Smith has some fun with the whole bizarre idea while director Peter Berg swings his camera about as he did for ‘The Kingdom’. It’s a very modern conceit: that behind every successful man lies an even better publicist. And it’s no coincidence that Hollywood, with its reliance on a well-oiled PR machine, has come up with a fictional publicist who’s more angel than svengali. But then the rest of the film – after an hour – flops spectacularly.

The big problem is that the script tries to have its cake and eat it, first ribbing us with nods and winks emanating from this sideways view of a superhero and then abandoning this detachment in favour of a traditional comic-book showdown that feels out of place, rushed and squeezed into the film’s remaining minutes. Put simply, the filmmakers bottle it.

Hancock’s reinvention as a good guy coincides with the emergence of a super-criminal played by Brit actor Eddie Marsan, who in the facial hair department looks like he’s stepped off the set of ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’. He’s a lame villain. There’s an unexpected twist that throws some weird, distracting logic into the mix, followed by a crisis, a fight, a spurt of apocalyptic digital larks – and it’s over. The film bows out not as a wink-wink pastiche but as a straightforward superhero movie – and a bad one at that.

Another good movie from Will Smith. Shows the diverse qualities of this actor as he plays a drunken down and out who just happens to be a down and out superhero. A little dark in places as the character struggles to calm his demons but well worth a watch.

This is a very different super hero movie, Will smith is excellent and plays a funny charactor who has super human strength but doesnt know how to use it. the visual effects are excellent and its an exciting adventure that is well worth seeing. the story is good to and very original.

i had been meaning to purchase this dvd for sometime and i finally got round to it today.... communication from the seller was excellent and am looking forward to sitting down to watch it...........

Will smith at his best!! A film for a good night!! Saw it at the cinemas and had to get it on dvd!! xx

I was very surprised by how good this film is Will Smith plays this very well and just when you think that you have the film sussed there is a twist that you didn't expect.

Great family film. Loads of action and effects and plenty of laughs along the way. Well acted with a great cast around Will Smith. A super hero story with a new twist I've not seen or come across before.

A great film for people with older kids (9+) to sit and watch together. A great film that is going to be back for sequels

An absolute dream to watch, full of Will Smiths usual humour and excellent acting. He looks good in lycra! Would definitely recommend to any Will Smith or Superhero lovers.

I bought it because i've read about it and because I wanted it and it was cheaper than high street. Highly recommended!

Maybe i expected too much but this was a let down from start to finish! Some poor(ly created) effects and a weak storyline. If this was classified as a U it might be acceptable but overall, very disappointing. Sorry, but don't make this a priority on your list!

Good special effects, good acting. Will Smith performed perfectly as usually. Some comedy but the storyline has a serious side to balance it out. I would recommend you watch this film.

this film is exciting and enjoyable, not the usual superhero film, which makes things even more interesting =)

Typical 'tounge in cheek' Will Smith film and definately not one to be taken seriously. The special effects are quite stunning and overall its an enjoyable film, with a plausable storyline which can be quite funny at times. There are some bargain priced DVD's on e-bay, so its worth a look.

A drunk with no respect for his self and his a Super Hero which costs the community plenty of money for his ditructive ways.There are lessons in life to be gleaned from this film but it is amusing watching as Will Smith takes the knocks of life and learns to adjust. There will be a follow on for sure and i will not spoil the plot too much but kids will love it as there are no real swearing but adult humour throughout.A good watch bring on number 2.....

I like it cause will smiths a great actor and always produces/makes really good films and this film has amazing special effects,id rate it a top film.there is nothing to dislike about it like i said great film.

one of will smiths best films, quite a good story with some genuinely funny bits. well worth the £1.50 I paid, especially as the film is good enough to watch a few times.
