Hamish MacBeth - Series 1-3 (DVD)

It's simply excellent! It tells a tale in umpteen episodes about life in the far North Western Highlands of Scotland, seen from the point of view of a young and somewhat disillusioned city-born-and-bred policeman (Hamish MacBeth), used to gang warfare, drugs cases, and other more serious crime, and how he takes to life being the bobby on the beat, where the back yard is a vast loch, his patch includes hill territory populated by sheep and highland cattle, his sidekick is a West Highland Terrier called Jock, and village life is full of eccentric characters living life to the full. Lots of madcap escapades, full of humour and not a little pathos as his character wishes to settle for this idyllic life, and the lady he falls in love with, born locally, longs for the bustle of city life. Harks back to bygone eras, it is a treat to watch, and has made the film location - Plockton, in Wester Ross - immensely popular with tourists. Yes it really is as lovely as it is shown. But don't tell anyone else, let's keep it a wee secret so not too many folk manage to find this wee gem of the highlands.
