  It's (almost) all I needed...
Review created: 20/11/09

This old, childish, preety and hollywoodish movie that no one who understands even the basics of using computers, antiviruses and firewalls wouldn't buy today has one tiny thing that hooked me up entirely to consider buying it (even if it has been reran on TV at least 10 times here in Croatia). It's the feeling, the teen/hacker/alternative/underground/feelgood atmosphere combined with surreal visuals, great scenes and excellent music (should get the soundtrack at least - oh yeah!) are what drive the viewer in just diving in this "90's cyber fairytale".

And now some things about the release itself. It's a UA re-release I guess because the DVD case is different from the one you will see on most websites be it on ebay or other places. In my oppinion it's worse than the original since it shows only Kate and Dade faces, with her weird/ugly makeup and no word of other hacers from the movie (which misses the point, frankly). Well, at least the image on the DVD medium IS better and features the famous "hackers in circle" photo/poster image. The DVD menu is silent - absolutely NO AUDIO background. Some people like it, some miss it. I prefer some ambient /noninvasive music, but I can live with that... Extras? Oh. Forget it. NOTHING. The trailer is crappy and made very very early in the production I guess since it doesn't feature ANY of the music tracks from the movie and that MEANS a lot. Also, noted that the dub is different in some scenes. No problem with that... I wish it had ANYTHING else than the trailer but OK. If they sacrificed it to bring more audio tracks and better video birate I can tolerate it. Since I'm Croatian I miss croatian subtitles but since I couldn't find the DVD anywhere in Croatia I knew I wouldn't find it in foreign editions.

Conclusion - I love the movie and you should too :D
It will not make a hacker of your kid, so it's entirely safe to watch.

Enjoy it!

To be honest, I didn't think it was all that good. The storyline went off a lot, and there a lot of really awkward moments. all a bit too weird for me. i much prefer the hacking film 'antitrust'. far far better!

I watched this film years ago, when Angelina Jolie was a mere teenager. The film brings back memories of when the next fastest modem was launched, and the computing power was doubling, and you had to get the best specification. This seems quaint, now, but with broadband we are getting faster, and even up to super broadband.
The characters are stereotyped by being "Geeky", but most "White-hat" hackers I know are not like that. But then, when has Hollywood ever let the truth get in the way of a good story?
A good escape from reality for a while, and transport back in time, so overall I rate this as "Good"

A excellent film! Superb actors and a thrilling plot!!!
Review created: 20/06/08

I have always been interested in computer hacking movies, cybercrime films and just normal thrillers!

I have never seen this film before, but have known about it before.

The plot was superb, and actually quite plausible. Apart from the occasional very over glorified graphic representation of the file systems. But apart from that the IT in the film was pretty accurate, considering it was made in 1995.

The film got straight into action and wasted no time! I always hate it when you end up watching a slow movie, with a rushed ending. This film is not like that!

I highly recommend this film for anyone - tech savvy or not! Everybody will enjoy this!

It is a thrilling crime buster, a warm romantic, and a hilarious comedy all in one!

Definitely buy this film!

  Hack the planet
Review created: 02/06/08

Hackers is a thrilling, vibrant journey into the world of cyber-culture and the computer hacker. Dade Murphy (Johnny Lee Miller) is a shy, socially inept computer whizz-kid who moves to New York with his mother, and soon mixes up with the ballsy Kate Libby (a young Angelina Jolie) and a gang of elite hackers (including Matthew Liliard) in a major electronic heist. These group of characters are the heart and soul of the movie, and it's hard not to enjoy their exploits as they take you through a subculture that has barely been touched by other mainstream movies - some people don't know it even exists. If you're one of those, you're in for a shock.
Director Ian Softley handles preceedings well, and even blurs the line between fantasy and reality by showing how the hackers see the world as a labyrinth of computer connections. The film has a harsh sense of humour too, and demonstrates just how powerful a computer hacker can be. The film also boasts a terrific soundtrack, featuring the best of Underworld, The Prodigy and Leftfield among others.

Although the dialogue and plot can be dodgy in some moments, Hackers is definitely an original and well-crafted movie adventure.

This is a great film with a strong young cast. Soundtrack is ace. The film moves along at a good pace and, for those not into computers or understand them that well, is funny and interesting.

Well worth a look. Highly recommended.

Classic Technology! Classic Haircuts! Classic Film!
Review created: 07/09/06

I remembered watching Hackers when I was younger, but I didn't really remember it very clearly. It was when my Fiance mentioned it, and asked me if I'd seen it that I thought about buying it!

I bought it on Ebay, and when it arrived it took me a few dayss to get round to watching it.
When I did, however, I must say how laughable the film was! The technology they clain is "state-of-the-art" in the film reminds me of my first laptop! The hairstyles are very dodgy (Angilina Jolie has a dreadful bowl like cut!) and the costumes are very punk-kid style. All very 80's!

Although the film is a bit far fetched, it still has a great watchability to it though! There are some classic lines of dialogue, and some pretty trendy computer graphics! (Ok, and you see Angilina Jolie topless!) lol!

I wouldn't class it as one of my favorite films of all time, but i'd recommend it to anyone who likes the 80's, and early technology!

  Hackers (DVD 2000)
Review created: 30/04/06

This movie reminded me of "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle." It's not INTENDED to be taken seriously, and therefore picking at it is just silly. Just like in H&K, here too some really superior acting not only saves the totally implausible story from overpowering the action and humor, but actually renders it an asset. It's obvious that everybody involved, both the actors and their fictional counterparts, is having a great time. Angelina Jolie is especially notable for her rendition of semi-goth girl hacker "Acid Burn." Both she and Jonny Lee Miller are still deservedly in the rising arc of their careers. Oh yes, in case you couldn't guess: they hack into some really important stuff involving the government and big business (duhhh). If you want to have some fun with superannuated teens in a story that keeps moving from beginning to end, "Hackers" will fill your bill

  Welcome to techie land!

Although not the most "accurate" of films when it comes down to the actual computer side of things, the movie does allow for "non-techies" to easily understand whats going on and gives a fair insight into the underground world of computer hacking, even if you have absolutly no computer know how the movie is done in such away that it is easily followed even when using some of the more "techie" language it never gos to deep so that you loose whats going on :)
